Nevada finshed 4-8 and 3-5 in MWC play last year. They played UCLA and Florida State and were blown out of both games. This year they are currently 2-1, with wins over Washington State and Utah State. They lost to Arizona by 7 in Tuscan. It sounds like he might be turning things around.

Mason is great. If nothing else, if we hire a young offensive minded coach such as Heupal or Sapavital who would have to scrap together a staff on the fly, Mason should be a candidate to stay on as D coordinator. Not sure he would want to work for a young guy so it might be a moot point, but he is showing his mettle with this interim situation.

Mason is part of the problem-sorry but if you actually follow SMU recruiting who do you think had final veto on the defensive side. Mason is the guy handing out scholarships to guys with no offers 10 months before signing date while June is playing golf in Honolulu

Agree - let's judge him on how his defense performs the rest of the year... they have done a halfway decent job thus far and now they are going to practice the way he wants them to practice. They will probably be a little more aggressive and they will handle the uptempo better than in the past. If the defense plays extremely well from this point forward, then he did a great job evaluating talent and identifying good recruits. If they don't, then you are right the buck stops with him.
I love Mason's personality. I'll wait to judge him on being a head coach (not a splash hire unless he wins one of the next two and wins conference), but if his defense performs great the rest of the year I have no problem keeping him on board as a DC.

And not all head coaches are going to be good head coaches at other programs. See Tim Beckman, Randy Edsall, Ty Willingham, and Dirk Koetter for just a few examples.

Way too early to say whether Mason should be a candidate to stick. He is talking about changing practice, changing culture. I want to see how that pans out before voting. But I sure like what I have seen and heard from him so far.

Agreed, I definitely like the changed helmet. Good to have alternative gear.

absolutely agree. June's gone but the rest of the lazy staff responsible for putting us in this hole are still here. Mason and staff are fighting for a job and are making a strong push to change perception. of course they are going to try to separate themselves from Jones, but let's not get fooled into thinking there has been some huge changing of the guard.
