No, acting quickly once there is a downturn is what keeps empires from falling. Not reacting after the downturn and hoping for better is what causes empires to fall.

So it's not planning during the good times and working to mitigate issues that could lead to a downturn that keeps empires from falling, it's waiting until they fall and then reacting.

Got it. Good thing we didn't do anything when the first warning signs appeared or we might have done it all wrong. It's much better that we let June not recruit for 3 years and burn the program down so that we can now keep it from catching on fire again.

I still don't understand why Willis never got a shot. He was a good, mobile and young QB and never got a chance with june. Dumb

Hubris. He was the 'best' player on the team, so June axed him for 'culture change'. He did the same to the star running back at Hawaii, for those reasons as outlined in the several books on June's time in Hawaii. Didn't work out so well this time.

Nobody ever changes anything when the good times (or in this case better than losing times) are rolling. The most effective organizations see that the bad times might be on their way and then have a plan to react quickly once they pop up. Most shareholders get pissed if you start making significant changes win times are "good".

I think that in this case, the organization recognized that things might be turning for the worst, put an extension in place that would not place financial pressure on a vehicle for change, and then made a move incredibly quickly (incredibly rare for a college coach to get fired after two games).

When we got rid of Bennett, I don't think anyone thought we would go to a bowl in year two of the Jones era. "The talent was too poor". Jones got rid of the starting QB, and people thought the timeline would be even longer.

We have better talent right now than we did then. And if the word on the street about both head and assistant coach pay is accurate, we are going to put together a better staff than we have had since the DP and this thing will be turned around in a year, two tops. The end of the world crap is so melodramatic it's absurd.

Hell, I did it in the other thread, and I'll do it again. If we have 3 classes full of horrible players like you are saying, then it should take at least three years to get us back to a winning program. If that happens, then you were right, I was wrong. I'll be on here and fess up. If we go to a bowl game in the next two years, then you all should come on here and say you blew everything out of proportion.

Rival's ranks:

2004: 144
2005: 82
2006: 110
2007: 99

2008: 91

2009: 81
2010: 76
2011: 50
2012: 90
2013: 71
2014: 99

Those numbers, of course, are nothing to brag about.

But, if you take those average ranks, then the talent is better now than it was when June got here.

I guess though that I have been shown repeatedly that we don't.

You guys have no concept of how bad the last several recruiting classes were under Bennett. I didn't know where to put 2008, but Bennett's version of that class would have been in the upper 100's if Jones hadn't added three star players in late Jan, early Feb.

And with whose players did Jones have the most success with during his tenure at SMU? Any way you slice and dice it, those numbers mean jack [deleted].

From another thread, here's a list of some of the players Bennett left for June. How many positions are currently better off than what's on this list?

QB - Justin Willis
RB - Demyron Martin
WR - Emmanuel Sanders, Aldrick Robinson, Terrance Wilkerson, Cole Beasley
TE - Vincent Chase
OL - Kelvin Beachum, Josh LeRibeus, Sean Lobo, Tommy Poynter

DL - Patrick Handy, Serge Elizee
LB - Youri Yenga, Justin Smart, Pete Fleps, Chase Kennemer, Will Bonilla
DB - Bryan McCann, Rock Dennis

K - Thomas Morstead, Kellis Cunningham

When that list was left for June to take over, how many of us were saying, wow, those guys are going to be great players someday! We didn't know what Sanders was going to be, people were ripping on Cole, the OL couldn't block at the time... they were 2 star recruits, lowly regarded, even less regarded than the players we have on campus now.

Lobo never played for june (I dont think) and Tommy Poynter wasn't very good...you want to talk about the OL Bennett left for June...Beachum, LeReibus, Tennison, Kelly Turner, JT Brooks.

That was a very very good OL for 2 years and had a lot to do with our success (Of course, AR, ES, CB helped) But it all starts up front..

In 2 years under Bennet, here were Emmanuel's Stats:

Freshman: 46 rec, 605 yards and 9 TD's
Soph: 74 rec, 889 yards and 9 TD's

We didn't know what Sanders was going to be?
