Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelAnyone seriously trying to make this claim has never played and/or even watched Texas high school football on Friday nights. Put your high school team on the field and here is how I (SMU's interim coach for a day) would run up 50 pts on you by halftime without ever throwing a pass:
Trot out our 5, 300+lb linemen. Add Gaines and Sutton at TE's. Take your pick of Davis, Colbert or Severt at QB. Throw in Pope, Gresham & Line in any type of backfield configuration you prefer. Steamroll down the field like Arkansas did vs. Tech until the opposing coach throws in the towel and the opposing players cry for their mommy. After being pile driven by Pope, Gresham & Line for a quarter or two, the majority of these kids (especially the LB's & DB's who probably avg about 160-180 lbs collectively) would be tackling at ankles the rest of the way or being carried off on stretchers. Re: To those who think we are at a HS level100% with football dad ... I get the frustration and thus the banter .... but no way, not even close that any HS team (incl the USA #1) beats SMU. For everything he stated and more. We may not have a ton of guys with BSC offers (although many were recruited and not offered), MANY had D1 offers and certainly D1aa ... but this team is filled with former;
1) 1st team all district 2) 1st team all city 3) 1st team all area ... all region 4) District MVPs ... all-state etc etc. I realize I am debating to prove a negative wrong ... and none of us can prove our point, except to understand the imbalance just in the physical difference ... forget the rest of the argument. All take that bet all day long.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS level
I do think 80% of FCS teams would beat us. Maybe 90
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelExactly. Stupid comment about us not being able to beat a high school team.
Also, for those saying we are the worst team since the death penalty... this team played two of the top three offenses in college football and didn't give up 95 points. You have to realize that today's offenses score a ton more points than the standard offense pre-2004. Remember the game JJ Joe didn't throw a pass? They ran the ball the entire time and ate clock for us. That game would have been insane in modern times. We actually made Baylor punt this time.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelI said we'd be a really good high school team. I've seen some really good high school teams, but there is no way they would beat this team in a game. I'd say that these comments were out of frustration, not reality.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS level
Isn't it stupid or should I say am embarrassment that this is even a debate? We have June jones to thank for this
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelWe didn't "not give up 95 points". The opposing coaches stopped trying to score. They could have EASILY scored 100+ without blinking an eye
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelleach would have scored over a 100 on us without a second thought and would have been throwing into the end zone as time ran out.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelA&M was at least 80 points better than SMU if they had wanted to run it up. I find it amusing that some find it necessary to debate a topic like this. Delete thread-Ban user

Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelI am not as worried about teams putting points on the board as I am us not being able to put points up on the board. Hell even the '89 team scored points. They may have given up 95 but at least they scored 21. I would rather have that than what we have had this year.
I honestly don't think we can score a touchdown unless something very lucky happens.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS level
What about the 37 point blowout loss to UNT? How do you explain that way? #HammerDown
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelWe would be a .500 team in the Ivy or Patriot league assuming we had a QB.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelSo is it the coach or the players. I hear all this beetching about the coaches and now the players can't even beat the local high schools I'm as dumb as a mule but last I check y'all had 3 and 4 star players with a minus 4 star coaching staff leading them down the drain. This in my opinion is not on the player. This is 100 percent on the coaches. We are not 3-4 years away With the right coach we are 3-4 snaps away. Standing there at that game last week and watching the same dum play calling. Felt like jj was still here.
Re: To those who think we are at a HS level
June's right hand man is in charge of the offense, his last little FU to SMU. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: To those who think we are at a HS levelI still firmly believe we will have some legit tweaks to the "O". Last game was too soon, and as Mason stated ... I'm (he) is a DC. It would be a challenge for him to debate with (maybe the wrong choice of words) with Dan and JP on O schemes and strategy. That is why we have a new O consultant in town who is both familiar with the R&S as well as other schemes. The ability to tweak and blend seems apparent to me. Only time will tell. I say we will see some new wrinkles Sat and more as the season un-folds. Mason understands this is his audition for SMU and/or somewhere. He knows the status quo will not work, nor has he ever been a huge fan of the R&S. IMO that is why we have a new O-line coach and now a new consultant.
