Some people are not meant to be long term employees unless you are willing to "bend over" to their every demand. Furthermore, giving in leads to more demands and a "bad ending" is inevitable. By all accounts, Harbaugh is not a pleasant person to work with.
Plus, is he really "that good?" When he took over the 49ers, they had a talented squad that just needed better coaching. He provided better coaching and they did fine. But, this year's team underperformed as his act got old.
Is he a bad coach? Absolutely not.
But Michigan is treating him like the Messiah. $5 says it bites them in the [June Jones].
1. Yes Harbaugh is intense and most likely unpleasant to work around. But there are multiple other coaches in this league that are competitive maniacs as well and their management puts up with them. Plus, York and Baalke need to know that there isnt a supply of great coaches floating around to be hired. The Niners made a good college hire, but college hires dont always work out (ie: Saban, Spurrier) and unless we make a splash hire of a former NFL HC we are looking at hiring a coordinator, which in my opinion doesn't compare to a guy with 3 playoff runs of experience under his belt.
2. I will give you that the roster was talented when he arrived. But taking a team that had lost for so many years and making them an instant contender is a remarkable feat. Especially with the old Alex Smith at QB, who at the beginning of that year looked like he would be released and after one regular season w/ harbaugh had managed to lead his team to a comeback playoff win against New Orleans.
3. A down year this year was somewhat inevitable given the off field distractions, injuries, toughest division in football, and fact that three deep playoff runs w/ excruciatingly close losses each yr wears on a team both mentally and physically
York will never be as good of owner as his uncle Debartolo if he keeps making poor decisions like this.
