Re: 1982 SMU v aTmI wouldn't say ceiling but its going to take a great plan, a lot of cash for promotions/marketing and hard work to ever get there.

Re: 1982 SMU v aTm
Just win. Beat TCU and Baylor a couple of years in a row and it won't take much. Just be good. With this staff, we just need to WIN! I really believe that . . .
Re: 1982 SMU v aTmIt can happen but SMU needs to recruit Texas high school students who are well-rounded and passionate about athletics and not just academics. Those graduating students stay in Texas and support their alma mater with $$$ and attendance. Also somehow have to make this THE Dallas area college team. It is affordable entertainment compared to cowboys, mavs and stars.
Re: 1982 SMU v aTmIf we had a 40,000 seat stadium back then, our attendance would have looked fine on TV.
Unfortunately, we had two options: 1) Texas Stadium: although modern, it was 20-300,000 seats too large for us and the UD was a horrible atmosphere for a college game; or 2) The Cotton Bowl Stadium: although I liked it, it was 40,000 seats too large and felt decrepit. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: 1982 SMU v aTm
And both were off campus stadiums. Would be interesting if we had an on campus stadium with that capacity during that time.
Re: 1982 SMU v aTmTexas Stadium was how we recruited the players to fill the stadium in the first place. Texas Stadium was our ace in the hole. Every kid in Texas wanted to play in Texas Stadium. The Class recruited with the sales-pitch "We are moving to Texas Stadium" was the greatest class in SMU Football History. We couldn't have financially made Mustang Mania work in a Ford sized on campus facility because the entire concept of Mustang Mania was to leverage a large empty seating block in exchange for city wide corporate marketing. Ex. you couldn't give Ford Motor Company 20,000 seats free to market the SMU game (commercial, test-drive free give-a-ways) in a small stadium.

Re: 1982 SMU v aTmStill can't
Re: 1982 SMU v aTmTo hear the crown and remember the players ( I should) brought back memories.
Thanks for posting the game. Next I want to try to watch the TT game that same year. It was nice playing on a level field with the others at that time in history. SMU can be good given all things equal. Even with higher academic standards. Go Mustangs. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: 1982 SMU v aTmAlthough it was not quite full, Texas Stadium was packed for the last really Big Game played by SMU Football in 1986.
Although we were under a bowl ban due to probation, our team was good and the Aggies were good (Cotton Bowl Bound). We lost 39-35. I am glad that I was there. By the time the next home game (The last in Texas Stadium I believe) rolled around, David Stanley had been on TV. It was like attending a funeral. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: 1982 SMU v aTm
Was that the Arkansas game where they threw oranges? Yes, it was a funeral.
Re: 1982 SMU v aTm
I don't remember any oranges. I remember that pathetic crowd photos (everyone looked sad) ended up in SI. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
