I have heard that he felt that he could mitigate Pye's excesses as AD. Unfortunately, Pye's Death Penalty 2.0 wasn't going to end until Pye left. As a result, he moved on.

Teams are allowed to kick the PAT if they score a TD as time expires if they remain tied or behind. Didn UConn not have the privilige of making us attempt the PAT?

Nevertheless I'm glad it turned out the way it did. Mike Romo was one of my favorites and that team had some really tough kids on its roster.

By that point in the game, my BAC was not conducive to clear thoughts. Carrying a Big Gulp sized Rum/Coke into the stadium was probably a mistake. :D

It was great having the 7-11 and liquor store so close to the stadium for beverage replenishment durning games.

I think that was Glieber who caught the long touchdown.

Didn't Forrest Gregg handle both the head coach and AD jobs? My memory is that after a year or two, he was invited to choose one job or the other. Everyone I knew at the time was very surprised that he chose to remain as AD instead of as coach.

Correct as I remember.

I have nothing but admiration for that team and coaching staff. To start from scratch and have so many inexperienced players is a huge disadvantage. To win a game coming from behind is an incredible feat.

The story I remember reading was a little different, although it amounted to the same thing. The administration in its wisdom decided to split the HC and AD jobs and Gregg had to make a choice. Some one said above he thought (hoped?) he could take the edge off Pye's policy and I'd like to believe he stayed and tried.

As an aside, I have always thought that the combination of Gregg as HC and Rossley as a top assistant deserved more praise than they are sometimes given.

I thought Doug Single was AD during the death penalty and Gregg took over when he left.
