It flipped when Tony Levine took over as head coach... From the OC Mike Nesbitt being forced to resign after his 1st game, to the disappointing Travis Bush, to Levine reigning in Doug Meacham as OC (see what he did at Okie St and TCU before and after UH), then back to Bush as OC. Just not good offenses.
But we did improve greatly on defense. After firing Jamie Bryant in his one season as DC, David Gibbs made HUGE strides. Hopefully new DC Tony Orlando can keep that up.
Before that, when was the last time UH had a great defense? Probably 1989. Obviously everyone talks about that team's offense, but that defense gave up less than 14 PPG including 2 shutouts and 7 out of 11 games at 10 points or less. Actually SMU achieved the 3rd highest point total against that team.
