Rest assured that the present coaching staff has been in weekly contact with every single recruit on our commitment list-these guys know what they are doing. If they keep this recruiting class in tact it will be an incredible achievement

Recruit Big men on D, LBs and secondary. They D needs more athletes at this point than the O. We d need O-linemen first on O.
HCCM will probably spend tow or three scholarships on the QB position. Need to start developing a replacement for Davis.

We can score (usually). Where we really need instant talent is on D.

Defense needs the attention. But I bet after what we have seen that if we keep David Moore, he will play next year. Morris has him pegged as the QB for his system and he will not lose a year redshirting him. He may not start game 1 but I would think he gets in early and often and is starting by conference time.

Are there any good D1 transfers sitting out this year, like they do in hoops?

There's nothing the rest of the offense can do to mask his inaccuracy, poor pocket presence and poor field vision. Well not unless we switch to the triple option.

We are obviously recruiting for a Chad style of offense, but given what we had to work with this past season, I think we could have run Navy's offense pretty effectively against some of the teams that beat us. At least we would have run down the clock and kept the ball out of the other team's hands for a few minutes longer per game.

Matt Davis is a mediocre (on his best day) college quarterback. He is very poor at diagnosing coverage and too often falls back on his running ability when his first read is covered. If he's our starter next year its going to be 3-9 or 4-8. He simply doesn't have enough to his game to be a consistent quarterback. Wasn't good enough for Tyler JC and it isn't good enough for SMU.

That said, our OL play was atrocious and our freshmen running backs (while showing some real promise) put the ball on the ground way too much. We've got some nice young players at receiver but we still don't have a true H Back/Tight End.

IMO, if we are able to hold onto David Moore then you open up the competition to Colbert/Hicks/Moore in the spring and move Davis to either receiver or free safety. There is no doubt that Davis is one of the five best athletes on the team. Give one of the young quarterbacks a full season to grow and mature. The hope is that by 2017 there is a squad around them that gives them a fighting chance. Yes 2016 will be rough but it will be rough with Davis also who is going to be a senior and won't factor into who will be here when we (hopefully) right the ship.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Don't move Davis. Let him compete, but he certainly isn't a lock for starting by any stretch of the imagination. The receiving corp is going to be good enough next year that he isn't breaking through that logjam anyway.

yeah - we are going to have a full fledged QB competition. Hicks didn't come here to sit, and moore for sure isn't coming to SMU to watch Davis flail around for a season. It will be a full throated QB. My money is on Moore relieving Davis at the first sign of trouble, no later than game number 2.

Job One -

Keep coaching staff intact. That alone will be a challenge despite said "beatdown."

I think Ben Hicks will start with Davis as backup. Moore will RS.

If Matt davis is not starting he is NOT playing qb. You don't just keep athleticism like that on the bench, June disciples.

Job 1 - upgrade the defensive coaching staff. With the exception of a couple of guys on the DL, name one player that consistently played at AAC levels?

Are you blaming that on the staff?

1) we gave up 40pts+ 10 times.
2) Navy and Memphis could have scored 75+ w/o breaking a sweat. We couldn't stop a FCS team from running it down our throat.
3) Nobody at DB or LB developed into an AAC caliber player.
4) We were actually worse than last year.

While the talent deficit was certainly a large part if the problem, the defensive staff didn't make things better. Name one thing they accomplished in 2015!

You do, especially if you don't know how much the OL will actually improve. It's not like we have a lot of chad recruits waiting in the wings.

WR: Sutton, Thomas, Proche, Castille, Honey, Guillard, Malone are all going to run ahead of Davis at that position. No reason to switch.

Safety is a bigger position of need. But a much bigger transition to make. I still don't think he is going anywhere.
