Although I shouldn't, I'm giving him a break on the odious La Tech performance. When SMU takes the field, shameful disgrace is always in play.
The roster has been improved, but super thin for years. When we sustain injuries, we run out of gas. The last two season, when Roberson is injured, we don't have the depth at WR and the offense struggles. Now, Roberson is clearly not 100%, but the offense is still flowing. Why? Depth. We have 1 and 13 and 10 off the bench to make a difference.
The transfer portal can plug holes. But recruiting builds depth. And now we have that depth.
If the season falls apart late this year, with the amount of depth we have, then absolutely we can be critical of that. But when you are forced to play guys at 50% late in the season and are holding the roster together with duct tape, that isn't on Sonny. When you don't have enough good players on your roster to compete for starting spots in November practice, that isn't on Sonny. That is on previous staffs who couldn't fill the roster. What we have now is a deep, Sonny roster. There is no reason this season should fall apart in November. If it does, then you start worrying about the coaching a little bit. Although I still rather enjoy 9 and 10 win seasons more than 5-7.
