Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyGood Read.
But with the talent we have now. Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyExactly, MTrout....why not play Northwestern, Vandy, Cal, GeoTech, Clemson, Duke, Wake, Auburn, Mizzou, Air Force, Army, KU, etc every year. Not saying we play OU / OSU / PSU....Rutgers, Miami, Illini, and so on. Make it so. BEAT UCF!
Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyA slew of P5 in name only schools would be really great if we could pull it off.

Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
We got a home/home with Kansas to open Ford. Not all P5 programs can pack 50k plus in on Saturdays regardless of the opponent. We need to aim for for who don't count on big attendance dollars, at least in looking for home/home deals. The reason we still hacve to play FCS programs is that they can offset those road warrior games where the program might want to make a splash...or even to balance home/road schedules like it was this year having to play at La Tech and TCU
Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyI like the idea of a 2 for 1 football series with a team like UCLA, UNC, Duke, etc. if we could get a 1 for 1 series in basketball with them.
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
We've had home/home deals with UNC in both bball and football in the post death penalty era, although they would not agree to play us in Moody. That was during the Kato Armstrong years and I remember Dean Smith asking "when does that guy graduate?" after kato played so well against them
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
UCLA and UNC might demand a 2-for-1. Duke is back to being fairly pathetic at football and has done home-and-homes with freaking Rice not that long ago. That should just be straight up. But, the only way to get Duke MBB in Dallas would be if a Duke senior (heh) was from Dallas and they wanted to schedule a game in Dallas for that reason. K used to do that all the time, when Duke MBB had seniors.
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
We can always do a 2-for-1 in football and let them have the first two at home and additionally have a 1-for-1 in basketball and let them have the first one at home. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
Giving any P5 program a 2 for 1 and allowing them the 1st 2 games at their place usually means they buy us out of the trip to Ford. Last edited by Charleston Pony on Thu Nov 11, 2021 7:40 am, edited 1 time in total.
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
Vanderbilt will be the test for this, won’t it? Or is that basketball?
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
Yes. My original post was a reference to our brilliant football deal with Vanderbilt. Shake It Off Moody
Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyI 100% agree with the original post.
At this point in time playing the weak teams that we play out of conference, for the most part, does nothing for us. They clearly don’t get us ranked nationally when it takes us winning five games before we get ranked. If we want to have the respect of power five conferences, we need to play power five conferences. And if we fancy ourselves as capable of competing in power five conferences then playing at least the lower echelon of teams in those conferences for our out of conference opponents should not be that tall of an order. And it would provide a significant bump in fan interest to be playing well known schools, that in many cases, have large alumni bases likely with plenty of fans in Dallas.
Re: Revised Scheduling StrategyAnother reason why ramping up quality of nonconference opponents makes sense is to “battle test” the team. SMU is not going to improve against most of the nonconference opponents it has scheduled for the past several years. Further, they risk developing a false level of confidence from those games that disadvantages them when they take on quality conference foes.
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
Good in theory. Remains to be seen whether the arse kicking the bball team took last night in Oregon will help them as they prepare for the 4 games we play against Houston and Memphis
Re: Revised Scheduling Strategy
I tend to agree with this. I just want this program to at least qualify for bowl games (however random) every year and to compete for conference championships, regardless of the level of competition within our conference. We haven't even sniffed that goal. It's like our local club pro told one of his junior golfers who told him he wanted to move back to the regular men's tee vs the ladies tee he was learning from "ask me again when you start shooting under par from those shorter tees". I just hope we can always continue the series with TCU as that will always be our "measuring stick" game. I'd like to get to where SMU owns TCU regardless of conference affiliations, but I like the fact that we are very competitive with them right now.
