What I like about Mack Brown that makes him different from hiring other so-called "retreads" is that he left Texas with a very sour taste in his mouth. The way he was ushered out wasn't pretty and certainly not on his terms. He wouldn't be coming here for the money like June did. Mack has already made his money. If he came here it would be to make it clear to everyone that what happened those last few years at Texas wasn't all his doing and that he still has the ability to build a program. He would be smart enough to realize the built-in advantages of a program like SMU just like he did when he got to Texas.

I would also like some sort of agreement like we have with Jank and LB. Maybe if Mack agreed to come here (given his age) we could have a Coach In Waiting type of position for David Beatty to further entice him to leave A&M to come to SMU. Can you imagine the kind of recruiting we could do with a staff that had Mack Brown and David Beatty?!

Also, imagine the fundraising this guy could do. The IPF would have shovels in the dirt by November.

I honestly don't know. Its so early in this process that anything is possible. I will say that after hearing his comments a few days ago there is no doubt in my mind that Mack Brown wants to coach again.

I believe Mack is still on the UT payroll, it's a one year deal for 500K. Does anyone know if he is still being paid by UT along with his ESPN gig.

Simms and McCoy were both NFL starters. Both were "developed" by Greg Davis (who will be Mack's first hire when he takes his next job).

I remember Greg Davis. Probably one of the worst OC's they had. People at UT were hoping SMU would hire Davis so they could get rid of him.

he's on the payroll as a "special consultant". it's just a consolation "prize" for the way he played nice at the end. there's nothing tying him to UT at this point.

UT "agreed to pay former coach Mack Brown $2.75 million that would have been owed him if he had been fired, and place him in a one-year, $500,000 job as a special assistant to the president for athletics."

Boom. Best staff in The American by a freaking mile.

If we did not get Morris or Herman that would be a nice staff.

i won't say in what context, but the school knows how VERY important this hire is going to be to get us in the P5. THIS hire is going to be the difference maker, b/c at the next cycle of realignment, which will probably be the last before a total reorganization in college football, we can't be looking for the guy to 'build' or 'turn around' our program. we may be looking for the next guy to carry on what has been built, but they know we have got to become competitive in football, and sooner than later. including doing whatever it takes to get more people into ford.
