I agree. If Sonny gets most of the assistants he is after this could be the best overall football coaching staff on The Hilltop in a generation.

I think great recruiters can bring in great athletes/players and that doesn't necessarily make them a great coach. A great coach can take an athlete or good player and make them better/great.

You are both right. great players can make coaches look really good and yet great coaches can get the best out of their players and make them much better.

Only about 2.5 years of recruiting classes have played discounting redshirts and as pointed out many times before only about 6-7 recruits in the first class were physically cleared and/or actually put on the defensive side of the ball.

I thought we were only 1.5 classes away? :)

Really?? IMO they are at half-staff and don't seem to have a sense of urgency to fill the rest of the positions. Amazing that a new coach for a pro team can build a full staff in less than 24 hours and we are still hoping to find coaches after 30 days on the job.
Wonder if Dykes knows that those unfilled schollies aren't carried over to next year.

Compare the resumes of who we have hired against who we hired under CM. The resumes are pretty nice. We shot high and landed a good OC. The offensive side is pretty flushed out. On the DC, we waited a week for a response from a top notch candidate who actually took our offer seriously. The urgency is there. They are just making sure they get the right staff in place.

It was a risk to wait the week, but I think worth the risk if we were truly in consideration.

Besides, I think Dykes surprised all of us when he was able to get a highly sought after tackle to come in out of nowhere and flipped another recruit from a conference rival in less than a week for the early signing period. Just because we don't tweet every time we down a red bull doesn't mean we aren't doing anything or have a sense of urgency.

Tweets and leaking info are not the only way to be active. This a busy weekend and believe key decisions will be made on the staff. Next Wii’s the big recruiting opportunity as many prospects will be on campus. Disappointment will be rightfully high if everything is settled by then

Like every hire we have made. My only complaint is that we got played by the TCU DC and wasted some very valuable time. That was obvious from a mile away.

So the two obviously got to know each other over the past year while Dykes was at TCU. But from a mile away you think that the TCU DC was willing to ruin that relationship by "playing" Dykes. And you think that our new HC is such a moron that he was fooled into thinking that the TCU DC was genuinely interested.

Yeah, you are right, that makes a lot more sense than we threw a lot of money at the guy because he had some frustration about not calling plays at TCU and having Patterson being overly involved in the defense and had indicated he might be interested in leaving.

It's funny going back to my original post and comparing who I wanted vs who we got. So far, every hire is better than what I wanted LOL.

The announcement is still in place as a football news item on SMU MUSTANGS, but he is not yet shown in the list of coaches under the roster.

Does that mean anything?
