actually PonySnob, Rossley in his fourth and fifth seasons-with his own recruited players- had a worse record than Bennett in his first and second season when Rossley went 2-19-1- and 4-26-3 in his third through fifth seasons. I really wonder if any head coach in college football history has ever survived a 2-19-1 record with his own recruited players in his fourth and fifth seasons and not been fired. As for Rossley's NFL players-I hate to break this to you but Tom Rossley recruited less NFL players than any coach in Texas. I never said Tom Rossley couldn't coach offense-I said he was a pathetic college head coach because he couldn't recruit and he had the worst fundamentally unsound defense against the run. Jim Shofner was a legendary offensive coordinator in the NFL but he ranks among the worst Head Coaches in Texas Football history. Your comparing apples to oranges. Just as Barry Switzer, Jim McKay and Lou Holtz were legendary Hall of Fame college coaches and thought of as flops in the NFL. If you can't beat Rice once in six years you are a failure in college football. PERIOD. If you go 2-19-1 with your own recruited players in your fourth and fifth season-YOU WILL BE FIRED! If you have a 22% winning record and ZERO winning seasons after six years at the same school you definitely will be FIRED. If you are hired to coach a school which has been in a conference for over 75 years and you proceed to go 6-35-2 (13%)against your natural and traditional rivals then there's a damn good chance you will be FIRED.
Stallion everyone else on this board sees your flawed logic but you. Obviously you have something agianst Rossley because your reason of thought makes no sense. We never said Rossley was the best coach, just that he actually did more with less talent and against tougher competition. Like someone esle said before the team at point had to practive from 7-9:30 pm because the school would not let the players register before the rest of the students so they could begin practice in the afternoon like every other school in the country. I actually believe Rossley is a good OC and not made out for a head college coach because he is not the most persoanable guy in the world. But the fact remains he got more out of his players under all of the restrictions, tougher competition, and equal or less talent. By the way Stallion, as you have ignored everyone's responses to you, you are crazy to thing the run the ball mentality would have worked aginst the UT's and A&Ms of the world.
Rossley still did not have one for the only winless seasons in school history. It would be interesting to know what the school was paying Rossley compared to Bennett - or even Cave-in. Certainly, SMU stepped up somewhat with regards to compensation when Bennett was hired. So far, it would be hard to say that the school has gotten its money's worth no matter how much they are paying him. I don't remember every publication rating us close to the very bottom of Div 1-A like they are right now. Didn't we even get a top 25 vote or two during the first or second year of the WAC?
Stallion, though I have heard it from you before, I am still surprised to hear you come down so [deleted] Rossley. No, he didn't exactly tear it up on the recruiting trail, but his restrictions were downright draconian compared to what even Bennett has to work with today, and you know that better than anybody. Sure he had the SWC to "sell," but he only had about 25 braniac players in the whole state of Texas to sell to. You can say what you want, but any coach who goes 5-6 on a division 1 schedule with more stringent recruiting rules than William & Mary is okay in my book. His W-L record as a coach overall was indeed horrible, but what did you expect fielding an Ivy League team? Do you honestly think any of Bennett's (or Cavan's) teams would have tied A&M?
Now, if the only reason you hate him is for never beating Rice, well, that makes more sense. I'll go with you on that.
