I went to school at Sam Houston State (1977-1980) because my family couldn't afford SMU. But that didn't prevent me from supporting BOTH schools during my college and post-college days. And yes...I do post passionately about the Bearkats on that fan board, too.

A shortage of cash may be an alien concept to many on this board, Mr. M65 but I for one understand. My father attended SMU on the GI Bill after WWII and I was a member of a very tiny minority on the Hilltop in the 1960's -- a working student. I worked 30 hours a week at Texas Instruments while carrying a full load. Talk about feeling like a fish out of water! But I still treasured my time at SMU and believe to this day that the experience was worth the effort.

I was in the co-op program at the engineering school and worked full time every other semester. There are ways to get money if you really need it.

I'm at my coop job 'working' right now. But I sure wouldn't be at SMU without a substantial scholarship and loans. I think I'm one of about 15 students at SMU who's parents don't own a BMW or nicer car.

Get this one. I look back and am greatful that my parent taught me how to work. I went to SMU for free but there was still no money. I wanted to join the Kappa Sig fraternity and have at least some fun so... I worked.
No not a coop job a TACO BELL job. The one right by campus on Mockingbird and on many occasions I served my fellow student or football player. Most of the time LATE at night.
The Kappa Sigs were cool about it, most of them, but it was way out of the normal.
I had a great time at SMU and hope that all students would know the pride of a hard days work.

You know I'm ready to borrow the bandwagon from Tony Kornheiser. He put it in his garage when the Redskins lost to the Cowboys, so I can probably use it cheap. I hope he doesn't mind red and blue paint instead of burgandy and gold. We beat the worst team in the Country except maybe Army. Now we are facing arguably the best mid-major program in the Country (except maybe Louisville). They beat TCU in the Cowpie Bowl last year and look was TCU did to us. They haven't lost at home since Hillary was a mere first lady. My friend here at work, Kim, asked me, what do the Mustangs need to do to win. 1. Score first on a turnover by them. That would really surprise them and us. 2. Score on a long bomb. Once we're up 14-0 they will get mad. So, we have to really play tough on defense and blitz like our lives depended on it. That would surprise them since we didn't blitz at all last week. We need to score every time we have the ball. If we do that we'll win. This is all very achievable (is that a word). But before we do that we have to see if playing Division 1 football this week passes the global test. I'm not sure whether that test is multiple choice or true/false. We could use the money we spend on tickets to feed the poor, help the homeless, and create new jobs. But I digress. So, in a word I only have one thing to say, let's feed those Bronco's a big fat brown sandwich.

Just to clarify, I work in the Financial Aid department. Yes it's a work-study job, but I make more than the average job. I won't say how much. I just wanted to speak on the comment that 15 students who's parents don't drive a beemer or better. That's not exactly accurate. 70% of students are on some kind of financial aid. We have a lot of middle-class students who like to act like little rich kids, but aren't really. In the 70s and 80s I don't believe financial aid was to the point it is now. The only people that cannot come to SMU comfortably are the people with parents that barely make enough to be over the line to receive financial aid. Those people are really screwed. Everybody else in America can come here today.

Interesting Thread:
- First, reality checks
- Enthusiasm for upcoming game
- Criticism of those looking for a victory
- Defense of and rationalizing posts
- Financial position of past and current students
Last time I checked, we all want the same thing;
Return to greatness.
My simple way of viewing things is to dedicate ourselves to supporting this team and the players. They are playing for us and our support is important. Criticism is acceptable but our support for the team/players can't be conditional.
If/when they beat Boise State, I will find great joy in these guys.
If they lose, they are still my Team.
Go U, S-M-U

I would tell those players and coaches the same thing that players and coaches have learned at other programs. Don't waste your time reading message boards about how great you are or how bad you suck. Trust, me stangdad, in "message board world", ponyfans.com is about as tame as it gets. Go take a look on hornfans.com and tell me if you'd like to be Mack Brown or Greg Davis. Trust me, Chris Simms wasn't the golden boy of the internet, either. If I were the coaches or players, I wouldn't worry one bit about some guy named Mike Damone who thinks we should've run play XYZ and should bench player ABC.
This board is for fans. Its a way to talk about the team, players, etc. Its the same conversations people would have outside the Boulevard, except there's more opinions and information available. When a player or coach goes to play D-1 ball, they know there's a chance someone will critique them at times and treat them like a god at times. If only positive posts were allowed on this board, it would be out of business by the end of the week.
PS- Putting down fans of SMU because they didn't attend SMU is flat out stupid and immature. In case you haven't noticed, we don't have the largest student base in the country or the most supportive. many of our alums move out of the city and out of the state. In order to be successful, we must attract fans that didn't attend SMU. Not everyone chooses their school based off of a football team. I would venture to say that level of education, finances, areas of study, location, etc. all factor into that decision. If some TCU grad wants to be SMU Superfan, I'm not going to be the one to tell him to go away.

I agree, and I don't think anybody has put down anybody else in this thread. I was curious as to the guy's desicion to go elsewhere, so I asked. And he answered.
Now carry on putting out "the vibe"--chicks do respond.

I highly recommend Led Zeppelin IV, side 1.
