Well, I posted something on TSU's fan board (www.bobcatfans.com) and here's what one fan said:
spockofSHSU wrote: There's discussion on the SMU fan board (www.ponyfans.com) that the Mustangs will play TSU in 2006? Can anyone confirm this? Brent answered: Yes, discussion have been on going for some time. I heard from SMU's standpoint its pretty much a done deal but Tx State still says some i's need to be dotted and the t's crossed. TCU is another deal Tx State is working on for 2008 football season.
so if true that would mean that SMU would play Arkansas St. Texas St, and NTSU in 2006. That would be a 12 game season I believe and I think Tech would be a 4th. So SMU would be bowl eligible by beating Arkansas St, Texas St, NTSU, Rice, Tulsa, Tulane and ECU. Geez! If nothing else we might have a shot at the Sun Belt Championship.
I have Texas Tech on 9/2/06, North Texas on 9/9/06, Arkansas State on TBD and Wake Forrest also TBD for 2006's non conference schedule. It doesn't appear to me that we have room for Texas State in 2006 unless we drop Wake Forrest and play a 12 game schedule. Am I wrong?
Not that I have anything against Texas State. It would be a much shorter trip for me to San Marcos than most anywhere else to see my Mustangs play.
You WILL NOT see SMU making a road trip to San Marcos. If we play a I-AA school, it will be at Ford. I've got no problem softening up the schedule and producing a winning season in 2006. I expect that if we post another 3-8 next year, more of you will come around to that way of thinking. Post more wins, put more butts in seats and then let's see how recruiting goes.i
I have it from a VERY good source at Sam Houston State that SMU was going to play the Bearkats last year (2004) but backed off when the Mustangs found out that not one, but two Div. 1-A QBs had transferred to SHSU. Those QBs were Dustin Long (formerly Texas A&M...now trying out for the NFL) and Noah Allen (Oklahoma). Allen will be around this season to take on Texas Tech in Lubbock on September 17, as well as the Houston Cougars.
Wake Forest was canceled...
A while ago I posted a note from the DMN. Basically it confirmed that the serieses (or is it without the extra "es") with Northwestern, Boston College, & Wake Forest had all been canceled. 2006 can't get here soon enough. And remember we've got A&M in '11 and '12... I think this all makes sense. Get our arse trounced once now... make sure we have some big competition lined after we get to some semblance of "good". Remember we've lined up these "creampuff" series(es) for no longer than two games. Look, '06 better be the year. Thus, no doubt our man Bennett should red shirt one of the two JuCo QB seniors.
Re:
Are we gonna drag Copeland to the fountain, and throw him in ![]() ![]() Are we sure that the Marshall on the schedule isn't the HS in east Texas? Better watch out scheduling those east TX kids. They're tough! GO LOBOS!
Re:Southwest Texas State....oops, I mean...Texas State University - San Marcos has backed off of that desire in the past couple of years. Despite upgrading their football stadium, they have a difficult time putting butts-in-seats on gameday. And their W-L record isn't really attractive to moving up to D-1A. They're in a tough conference (Southland) and have been bottom feeders for quite some time. I doubt you'll see TSU-SM moving up to D-1A anytime in the near future.
Not that Jim needs any defending from most of us clowns, but... to his defense... when Jim originally inked the deal with Okie State (and more recently with TAMU), who would've thought those programs would have gotten so good so quickly.
When SMU added A&M to the schedule, I thought it was a good move. Sure, they'd probably beat us, but at the time TAMU's program was in disarray, so one figured it wouldn't be a blowout. And they're an old SWC team, and they'd draw a zillion fans. With our luck, Arkansas State and UNT will probably turn out to be top 25 teams by 2006.
Interesting thread. As a Southern Miss fan I can tell you guys that USM fans have ablsolutely no enthusiasm about playing SMU in football. That being said, I am glad SMU is in CUSA and hope your football does improve. As for the posters in this thread copping an attitude about playing Ark State, have you guys been in a coma the last decade? I dare say most college football fans see zero difference in the two programs. I suggest you schedule some winnable OOC 1A games because you are going to struggle to win in CUSA. Anyway, I hope for CUSA's sake that SMU can put a good product on the field. Good luck.
No question about who's the best SMU ![]() ![]() ![]() dead dawg. Why're you kickin us before we are even on the schedule? BTW, we're the ones with the hooves for KICKIN ![]() Also, it was your former cheetah coach Collins that kept us in our NCAA mess, and I have no reason to believe that y'all have reformed. NCAA is a pile of it, as you probably have known for most of your years. Don't EVEN think the "REAL" team is even remotely thinkin about you all lately.
It is a simple statement of fact. Southern Miss is a proud football program. Beating a pitiful program like SMU's is not something we are excited about. Your lame comments about Collins are rather funny. SMU had been running all of their illegal stuff for years before Collins showed up. As for us not having reformed, I will just simply ask you to check with all of the programs we recruit against and see what they say. Bower runs such a clean program it is hysterical to even read your comment. Anyway, for the sake of CUSA I do hope SMU can field a decent team. As for those bashing Arkansas State, I seriously doubt SMU could beat them right now. I do hope you do though.
