SMUnick wrote:"Lets do a little study- I bet the top teams in the country do not jack with Uniforms in a major way. So I guess your not considering MIAMI a top team in this country... I guess you dont consider MICHIGAN a top team. And i guess you think other programs such as Cal, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Maryland are slouch programs as well.

I said MAJOR way! Read Above! Michigan highlighting numbers on the jersey is not a uniform overhaul. Gee- I don't see a school listed above that has changed helmets in the last decade. Bottom line is we had the best uniforms in the country and someone changed them with no regard to tradition. Your opinion seems to be the minority anyway.

I also agree with Stallion and others.

Maybe we should let the players pick their 'cool' uniforms AFTER they produce at least a winning season.

I'd like to see Michigan's new 'growling wolverine' helmets when they ditch those old Princeton wings. You know, something that today's players can really identify with.

im pretty sure this thread was a "new jerseys" not a "new helmets" thread...And which "era" did we have the best jerseys? Last time I checked, SMU tampers with the jersey combination every few years or so... And to the Michigan part...They didnt just highlight the numbers... They added yellow piping on the shoulders, got rid of the famous "M" on the away jersies, and added the Miami "BraStrap" without an outlining color. (those are pretty MAJOR changes)

I know this is off in the future, but since the 2007 season will be the 25th anniversary of the 1982 SWC and 1983 Cotton Bowl Championship team, along with the final #2 ranking (you're welcome, Joe Pa), we should go back to the "Pony Express" uniforms - blue home jerseys, white pants, white helmet with red mustang.

Winning cures all fashion faux paxs.

Someone mentioned the red pants in the road uniform that one year. Well, I remember that being a great look for us. Probably because we won in Fayetteville wearing those red pants.

All you people who think that the 1982 uniform was the best in America, probably do so because that uniform brings back memories of the good old days.

As long as we win, I don't care what we wear be it red, blue, green, purple, maroon, or orange. Well, maybe not purple....

Just win.....PLEASE!!!!!!

I doubt we have a traditonal jersey, but personally I prefer a solid jersy (what ever color) without stripes, swatches, swoops or other embelishments other than the SMU letters and the players number. If you just have to have player's names too...that's OK with me. The only traditional thing I can think of right now is the RED running mustang on the helmet. I like the dark blue helmet with the red stripe, but the white with the red and blue stripes is OK with me too, though I never particularly liked the red face mask. The worst was the white helmet with no stripes...it looked like a bunch of ping pong balls out on the field.

It's very possible that people love the early 80's uniforms because SMU was so good then. For me, I was born in 82 and had never seen an SMU game before the Kansas game in '00. I'd say I have a pretty unbiased opinion of older uniforms, but I would still agree that the Pony Express unis look great. I'm an SMU fan through and through, I'll watch them in whatever uniforms they wear, and I bet I'd care less if they were winning in them, but I personally think that the 80's uniforms look classic. Not SMU classic or Eric-Dickerson-was-great classic, but just classic all around. Ask fans of other schools, they'd agree how awesome those uniforms looked, and I doubt it was because they loved seeing the Pony Express tear up their teams.

One more thing, that U of Miami bra-strap look is quite possibly the WORST uniform design I've ever seen.

Number 1, no i dont work for the school and yes i had just 6 posts and if any of you have something to say that i have "a lot to learn" or "a ways to go" you are sadly mistaken, i gaurentee i know more about smu football currently, than anyone on this board. Yes OU, USC (which there uniforms have been changed 2 yrs ago), texas, etc. have had the same jerseys but there is one difference, THEY WIN, they have the recruits, they dominate, we dont, we have to use every edge to get every recruit we can, if it is new jerseys, good. Sorry to tell you guys this but players like to look good, thats not selfish, just the way it is. I dont like them, but look how much attention Oregon got when they went to their new jerseys. And by the way, what traditional jersey of SMU are all you talking about? The light blue, the navy blue, the red, the white, the NY jets style, the Ole Miss style, the white pants, blue pants, red pants, silver pants? I dont think smu has a traditional jersey so it really makes no sense. Let the players look good.

For what it is worth - I dont' mind the current helmets. I do mind that they are atop red jerseys - just looks funny with red torso and blue head. Since I think the red jerseys look excellent, I wouldn't mind seeing blue pants with red jersey, and a helmet that is either white or red. Going back to red helmet and white pony would make us arkansas clones (yes, I know we used to have red helmet/white pony but nobody knows that today) and a blue pony seems to be out of hte question with y'all, how about blue pants, red shirt, and white helmet/red pony? (and tapering stripe going front to back)

amen to that smuwins... the only thing that is constant is the running mustang, and as far as I know, it will be on the helmet this year. Does anyone know if these jerseys will be for sale??? Im def gonna buy one.
- and for sally... Yes, the bra-straps are UGLY! It could be worse guys, SMU could have ripped of Miami and Mich.
