Dooby wrote:SMU Blog threw out a name I never heard of-Randall Shannon, the DC of Miami. Said it wouldn't happen but that it would scare the crap out of every coach in Texas.
Edit: I just looked up this guy on the Miami website. Wow. I like him. Perrenial top defense. Played under Jimmy Johnson, coached under Dave Wanstead, Butch Davis, Larry Coker. Started 4 years at Miami. Drafted by the Cowboys in the 11th round in 1989 and played two years. As a coach, he went from Miami to the Dolphins and back to Miami. Not even 40. African-american. Won a national championship as player and as an assistant.
Oh gee, did I mention to a few people a few months ago that Randy Shannon would make a good coaching candidate? I guess I did. How'd you like that Virginia Tech game? Miami's D is really, really good. Shannon will be a great HC one day.
Oh, and the thought that Flanigan as the next HC is kind of funny today.

If Bennett does not work out, SMU MUST, MUST, MUST get a name.
The program is desperate and it is time to go for it.
Hell, extend the Houston ship channel up to Dallas and give Jimmy Johnson a call.

How about Ron Jsperson, DC at Miami, or Billy Wandell, QB Coach at Clemson...Roger Lipscomb, Assit. HC at LSU is strong, John "Johnny" Johnson, DC at Rutgers, they have really turned that program around, William Leonard, OC at Cal...Jeff Dampson, OC at Utah State...Willis Hatfield, HC at Toledo, seen this guy, huge man, funny, tough as nails...how 'bout MrMustang716388, loyal to "his" U, scrappy enough to want to brawl with Turner & Copeland on the 'vard, on gameday!! We need that kind of stupidity,I mean passion on the field.

The only way that Bennett is not back next year is if Copeland is gone, especially since Copeland gave Bennett that two year contract extension just last year. If Bennett is back next year he had better find 1 quarterback and stick with him or we will be looking at another 3 win season for sure!

I was upstairs watching the Rice game and Copeland and his wife were getting on the elevator. someone next to me said hey it's Copeland. Don't think he heard it but his wife sure did and got googley eyed.

Forgive me for not making the same leap you are, but .... how does this matter? Most 18-year-old players know little more about Waters other than "didn't he play for the Cowboys?" And unless the moms are going to get all dreamy-eyed to the extent that they open their checkbooks and make a fat donation to SMU, their 30-year-old crushes don't matter, do they?

not that I am advocating that we fire Bennett and hire Charlie Waters, but if there is still a large group of 30 year old women that have a crush on Charlies, and he was our head coach, then that could be a very good thing. It might bring in a lot of thirty year old mom's with no affiliation with SMU, they would probably also bring their husbands, and their kids, if they have a good time on the blvd. guess what, maybe we have created some new fans. To me that would be the real benefit of hiring either a local or national celebrity to coach the team. If Bennett doesn't get it turned around, then maybe we should look at someone with some local name recognition, maybe a bored ex-cowboy that would be willing to work for us not for the money, but just for something to do

First of all, he's not without anything to do.
However, I'm trying to work through your scenario. I don't know if you're married, abezontar, but if you are, can you imagine sitting at the kitchen table in the morning, drinking your coffee and hearing your wife say "hey, the new AD over at SMU is cute .... let's go to a game."

Please note also (and I am not involved in this argument) that it is not 30 year old women. It is 30 year old "crushes" from women that are probably my age or older. (60ish).

sorry, I don't know anything about Charlie Waters' age or anything else and it wouldn't necessarily have to be Charlie Waters, as for the marriage argument, I am, and I am not so insecure in my marriage to assume that a celebrity crush is anything more than that. If my wife lets me notice and comment on attractive female celebrities, why can't I let her notice and comment on attractive male celebrities. I'm also considering we hire this person not as an AD, but as the Head Coach someone who is arguably more in the public eye as the representative of the team.
