We should improve with the schedule next year, but what we want is to play a more difficult schedule and not only compete but win. I have been an optimist on this board for a long time. Probably a sunshiner to many, JT for sure. But today I am upset. Although I have no proof, I am sure our intent was to sign several JUCOS yesterday. I was figuring on 6 or more, possibly many more. I think this was the thought of the coaches also, but apparently we could not admit some of those we wanted. And to make matters worse, they are signing with our fellow conference teams or our cross town rival, or at the least other non BCS teams. SMU has so much to offer to a recruit that there is no reason we can not recruit successfully, especially in the DFW Metrolpex. But look at what is happening. You have heard the mantra for several years because it continues to go on and on and on without any changes, or what changes are made are not sufficient to make a difference. I am never displeased with a recruit that signs with SMU and will support them completely. It is obvious to me that they made a good decision. But we are not only missing out on some good players, but we are falling behind the very teams we play against. This is not a BCS versus mid major argument. This is what is continually referred to as wanting to compete on a level field.
Welcome the lasting vestige of the Pye model. Pye's motto was "Failure is the only option." And his model keeps giving and giving. The University has made progress and things have improved but we are still a long way from a commitment by the administration to win.
..it amazes me the influence a dead guy can have from the grave..what's it been, 15 years since Dr. Pye passed? Get over it, guys..this ain't a Pye problem....unreal!
The Pye Model was the "several steps backward" that has not yet been overcome by the "few steps forward" that have been made in the past few years. It did exist, some of it still exists, and until it ceases to exist we will continue to be noncompetitive in the recruiting of athletes. The man's death has nothing to do with the existence of policies....get real! The death penalty as an excuse no longer holds water, but the policies of the administration are directly related to success in recruiting.
You don't realize what he did. Right now, about everything in the "Pye model" has gone by the wayside, with a few exceptions. But what lingers are very expensive to fix. Case in point, we used to have an education degree and a lot of athletes were majoring in that. And there used to be a general for credit PE requirement, which I am not entirely sure, but I think would be an acceptable transferrable elective credit from a junior college. Wellness was replaced with non-credit pass/fail requirement. Degree programs were eliminated and the resources used to fund those programs were reallocated. You can't just flip a switch and get those things back and there has been very little initiative to do so until recently. To fix the transfer issue is going to take raising money or cutting resources from somewhere else, which would be very unpopular. So, yeah. I am still blaming the dead man.
FDR, dead and still we have Social Security. LBJ dead and yet we still have Medicare. Huey Long, dead yet he still gets elected in Louisiana. And of course there is Earl Long, Huey's brother who famously said, "Bury me in Louisiana when I die so I can still vote." It is amazing what dead guys can do from the grave. ![]() ![]()
Thanks to blog for making some points more clear. Pye was the nail in the coffin in regard to our university Presidents. To me, the slide has been longer starting with Zumberge (who later tried to do the same @usc) then Shields, who I thought wasn't such a strong President either. Then came Pye, to really screw up the athletic model. Unless changes start at the top, nothing will really change. Why do you think sc brought in Sample, then Mike Garrett??
We all can complain, but unless there is upper level motivation, we are going nowhere. And yes, I too still see Pye and his predecessors to help blame. Go Ponies!
yall keep forgetting that channel 8 is owned by Belo.. Huge UT boosters and yes hopkins deserved some credit for the game.. but unless there is negative coverage of smu or big news Belo and Hanson won't have anything to do w/ it.. I think he would rather talk about HP's qb than talk about smu football
next time i see him at the ticket i will ask him
