Oklahoma determines Peterson's car deal is legitimate

April 19, 2006

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson did not violate NCAA regulations by buying a car and returning it several weeks later, the school's compliance department has determined.

Peterson, the runner-up for the 2004 Heisman Trophy, secured a financing agreement and drove the car for several weeks last winter but then returned it, said Bonita Jackson, Peterson's mother.

"We were gonna purchase the car, but the payments were gonna be too high, so we took the car back," Jackson told The Oklahoman, which first reported the story Wednesday.

Oklahoma officials determined Peterson did not receive an extra benefit that is not available to the general student body.

"Federal law pertaining to students prohibits the discussion of internal reviews in specific terms, but we did initiate a review pertaining to an automobile dealership and its interaction with a student-athlete," Oklahoma associate athletic director Keith Gill said in a statement. "We have pursued the matter in exhaustive fashion over a five-month period. Based on the information we have gathered, we do not believe NCAA rules violations have occurred."

The dealership, Big Red Sports and Imports, regularly allowed customers who signed contracts to drive the cars for a period of time before financing had been secured, said Brad McRae, the dealership's part-owner at the time of Peterson's agreement.

"We didn't do anything wrong," McRae said. "Is it standard operating business practice? Yes, it's standard operating business practice."

Peterson's stepfather said his family is committed to keeping Peterson eligible for football.

"This is our child's future," Frankie Jackson said. "We don't want anything to happen to him because of some silly car deal. We're not going to do anything to jeopardize his future."

Oklahoma also investigated the employment of football players by the dealership but found no violations.

Hot shot backup? Who??? It's between a JuCo transfer and Paul Thompson, who lost the job after one game to Bomar last year and was moved to WR.

And it was $18,000 for the SUMMER. 12 weeks * 5 hours/week = 60 hours worked. $18,000/60 hours = $300/hour.

I say we call him up. Let's push the "giving a kid a second chance" angle. And if that doesn't work, I'll bet we can find someone to pay him more.

Sam Houston already has a former OU QB on its roster: Noah Allen. It's very possible that he'll be the starter against SMU.

Let's get Dale Hansen up to Norman pronto to get to the bottom of this.
Certainly he'd like to investigate ..... No?

Whatever happened with the Aggie recruit quoted as saying the Aggies keep your pockets full of money? That sort of died, didn't it? Media had no will to dig on that one.
I could honestly care less what happens to him from this point. As was stated above the kid is a punk and deserves everything he gets. Perhaps he'll learn a little humility and start making a positive contribution to society after this incident.
Vince Young .... we'll never know, will we?

(Wouldn't be surprised if UT is behind this Bomar revelation.)

This is totally booster related at this point. As long as the coaches and/or adminstration are not involved (or proven to be) there will not be any type of punishment beyond what OU is doing. Now, tie in the coaches and you may have something. I used to hunt with Jim Bertelson (All American UT around the time of dinosaurs). Jim told me that he an another UT player were paid a tidy sum, $5000/month I think to guard a beach in Hawaii. Now mind you they were not guards on the beach. They were assigned to guard the beach and make sure it did not disappear. Of course round trip transportation was included.

Now thats funny!

Stampede is right though, OU (my 2nd favorite team, as I was born in Norman) is screwed...eithey they move Paul Thompson back from WR (he wasn't very good last year), play a JUCO recruit (likely), or go with a redshirt freshman

either way, Adrian Peterson is gonna be looking at some 9 and 10 man fronts next year, thats for sure.

I'm still shocked at this, but clearly OU didnt want to be in trouble with the NCAA, why else cut your starting quarterback when you're a BCS bowl contender?

Given your opinion of the boy....he is going to talk....this is just the tip of the iceberg! OU ratted on him to out of damage control and he won't allow himself to be the only one hurt!

More than likely it was Oklahoma State alums. They've been all over Big Red Imports since the Peterson affair.

In April there was a new ownership group that took over that car dealership. It was taken over by a very powerful local car dealer named Hudiburg. They are having a terrible time trying to explain to everyone that they weren't the owners when this happened. Everyone is pretty furious with Bomar at OU. It all started when he received that Minor in Possession charge in April. I think the season is pretty much over for the sooners.

Name-dropper.

But the story does bring to mind the time Cotton Speyer and I climbed Mt. Fuji.

As we neared the peak at sunrise, ol' Cotton explained that all major football programs cheat. He said, back in the 80s, UT alums paid players to pay SMU players and then rat them out.

I was stunned. Not the Longhorns!

(to the ultra-serious, this post was a joke.)
