I think DeMyron Martin could play at UT.

Doubtful he'd get a chance. They have no shortage of highly recruited running backs. Plus, if he was UT-caliber, wouldn't they have recruited him?

However, even as we get better, we won't be rivals with those old members of the SWC because they have left us so far behind. For those of us who long for the old SWC days, that is a sad truth and hard to admit.
Agreed on all counts. I get sick just thinking about it.
Here's one for the good ole SWC, crooked as it was.
May all our tears fall in our beer.

Why didn't they recruit Terrell Owens, Terry Bradshaw or any of the other NFL stars who went to lesser schools? Because recruiting is an inexact science.
And don't forget that DeMyron did get offers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, TCU, and Baylor. So even by your standards he's no slouch.

No, I mean I never said he was. Now go practice the song. And try to get the lyrics right this time, if you want to be considered a loyalist.

An NFL Hall of Famer speaks to a sold out ballroom to kickoff the hometown D-1A football season and NOTHING>>>>> Not worth a mention of any sort.
It is truly astounding.
But they did feature a breathtaking note that two UT qbs held a presser to announce there was no qb controversy in Austin.
I honestly believe the DMN sports higher ups have no intention of giving SMU anything that might increase its chances of taking prized recruits from Austin.
It's Friday...and there's still no mention of it in the DMN.

I get the morning news every day and I don't recall reading stories about anybody's "kickoff luncheon." Why should SMU get special treatment? Geez, we've sucked in football for twenty years!!

Oh, c'mon JT. You know darn good and well that the DMN publishes stories every year about U.T. and A&M having their Dallas area 'kick-off' lunches. They may not call 'em kick-off lunches but it's where the head coach of those teams comes to town to talk about the upcoming season. And it's not 'special treatment'...SMU is THE UNIVERSITY for Dallas, TX. SMU is the ONLY NCAA Div. 1-A football program in Dallas and, as such, deserve at least a 'mention' when an NFL Hall of Famer/SMU alum speaks to a large gathering of SMU fans. I'm not asking for the moon. I'm not so naive (anymore) to think that SMU is going to garner more column inches than UT or A&M in the DMN. But no mention at all?

They mentioned the naming of captains. As far as I know that occurred at the luncheon. There's your mention.

The naming of the captains information was lifted from a sports department press release. It's on www.smumustangs.com.

Until CUSA teams start beating upper eschelon BCS teams with some regularity, SMU will not be taken seriously even if it has a great run. SMU, Rice, UH, and Tulane all have old strong pedigrees in football and if they can start winning those important OOC games, then we'll get the better recruits and the more respect. And all four of those teams are in the same division in CUSA as are UTEP and Tulsa, so we can have some stability regardless of whether the BE raids the eastern division or not. I for one would like to see our conference schedule be something that other teams would fear to play. We're not there by a long shot, but its not impossible either.
