Willis looked down field all day-couldn't hit anyone but Sanders, Now there were two occassions when he had two receivers-I believe it was Blake Warren on both occassions WIDE WIDE open for potential TDs-but to be fair he threw to the short man both times after long scrambles-BUT both I believe resulted in SMU First Downs-so that didn't kill us. Otherwise, Willis bought plenty of time to make plays but I didn't see the WRs working well once he scrambled. The problem wasn't with conservative play calling-it has more to do with our failure to execute in the running game. We are a very poor offensive run blocking team. Haven't been able to make 3rd or 4th and short for the last two weeks and on other occasions this year.
Uhm.. DING. I guess Stallion and I saw a different game than the rest of you.

Wrong dude, if you watch the game, SMU shot themselves in the foot. Horrible fumbles and conservative playing lost SMU the game. You capitalized on our mistakes. The SMU defensive was all over your *cough* Heisman Trophy candidate (I guess all you need these days is a website). Your RB's were outstanding, but by no means was this a game where Houston overcame themselves to win. We grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory.
apparently its more than just a home brewed website.

Apparently not much. That site has nothing to do with the Heisman

no its not the heiseman finalist list. but some of your fans feel Kolb is not worthy of being a heisman hopeful or that he is not a special player. i think this reinforces his name being thrown around as a heisman candidate.

I had to stay in Houston and couldn't get up to Dallas for the game. The first half I was in the car and had to listen to the Cougar announcers. They were saying things just as bad about our Mustangs as our announcers were talking about them. The said things, like "SMU players are taking cheap shots and Justin Willis looks confused out there and can't even pick up a cover 2"
I hate to admit it, but we gave away the football game. Our defense gave the team a chance to win, but our offense didn't take care of business. Plain and simple we gave them the ball game.

In case you weren't out there in pre-game, Houston players ran THROUGH SMU stretching circles when running out. They almost got in a brawl. Then, a UofH player gets ejected. Then, your crowd is yelling expletives at our team as they walk off the field in front of children. Your coach is a c*nt, your team has too many classless players and we let you guys win.
Congrats. You still go to UH.

[deleted] brats. I hope Aldridge chooses to go in the draft.. then we'll see how much [deleted] they want to talk next year without him and their precious Kolb.

Kolb did not impress me AT ALL today, but then again he didnt have to, did he??? Plano West Senior High could've defended the run better than SMU did. Also, the more I think about it, I believe Stallion is right, there were a lot of designed deep throws that Willis had to scramble around on, it all goes back to the Run Defense though IMO

I noticed yesterday that Willis can not see the middle of the field receivers on his initial drop back. This is a height problem as Stallion has often mentioned. When Willis drops back he appears to be looking straight downfield and there are open receivers early on breaks. It may be that he is just a little hesitant and that will improve with experience, but I wonder if he can see them. The only time he is able to throw downfield is when he has broken out of the pocket and stepped up. By then it is often too late to get the pass away. Perhaps they need to roll him out more. He could always pull up and throw down the middle after a short roll, but I truly think he is being hindered by his height. He is a good QB and I am not trying to take away from his assests that he brings, but we need more vertical and fewer sacks, and some quick slants over the middle of the field that will open up a lot more of the offense. The way things are now, the LBS can always play for the run first because there is not passing game in the 10 yard middle range.

mrydel: we noticed the same thing about Willis not being able to see the middle of the field. Our OL is not quick enough to run wider splits and it does appear to limit this offense. I'd still like to see more use of our TEs in the middle of the field, but I suspect the coaches didn't like our "speed - or lack thereof" matchup with Houston's LBs.
And thank you, Houston, for bringing a spirited 3,000 fans (my est). Definitely added to the atmosphere. Siting on the visitors side, it's easy to appreciate how quiet our crowd is and it was disappointing to see how many left at halftime.

Isn't the reason you don't run more quick slants with a small QB is that there is a tendency for the DLM to get their hands up and tip the ball causing interceptions. That's how Tony "Tip" Eckert got his nickname.

It is not that we do not pass it on a quick slant. I do not think we even run one. There is nothing keeping the LBs from stepping into the line on the snap. Until we get the linebackers to back up a little our running back "dancing" will not be effective. We obviously are not going to develope a power back play. We allow 7 men in the box while still having ample pass coverage due to the short center of the field not being in play for a pass. The corner plays inside and uses the sideline to help in coverage. You can see the success of the deep center when Willis has time to get the pass off and steps thru the pocket, but that takes too long to develope to be reliable. The wide receiver screen is the closest thing we have to a short center pass but it developes so fast and so short that defensive lineman are making the tackles on it.

was this original poster's beef w/ the announcers on the radio??? B/c I know he's not talking about the stadium announcer b/c he's not really biased at all. Sure, he says the "third down thunder" thing and "First down SMU" w/ excitement, but other than that he's just sorta there...

which, by the way, is a good thing, i hate it when the stadium announcers are biased and all rah rah for the home team...it sounds cheezy and like high school or something. Tech's guy was bad this year, and so was the UNT announcer - he was particularly un-professional
