Please do not EVER run a delayed handoff on 4th and goal ever again. Put Ryan Kennedy as blocking back and give it to Martin. Your idiotic playcalling cost us another game!!

AGREED, QB keeper, play action, anything but a delay or sweep on 4th and 1...WTF. Kick the f'in FIELD GOAL!! This is SMU, take the points.

We should ALWAYS take the field goal until the fourth quarter. The loss of momentum is too much to overcome. Also I have noticed that our success rate is less than 20% when we go for it on a 4th and 1. PB has cost us several games over his tenure by going for it rather than kicking the field goal in these type of situations!

Apparently not. And for those that say we took points off the board, we did not. The penalty that gave us 4th and 1 was a dead ball and the kick did not count. You can argue going or not going (and I was for going for it) but it was not a "points of the board" issue. I would like to believe that Morestead would have made it however.

Mrydel,

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought it was an off-sides call that got us from 4th-and-6 to 4th-and-1. That is not a dead ball penalty--we could decline the same as if they jumped offsides on a regular play. It was a "free play".

No. It was offsides by contact. There was no free play. It was dead ball.

DickerJames wrote:It didn't cost us the game, but it did make it more difficult and was a STUPID call. If you can't power the ball up the middle for one yard, then kick the field goal. If we had kicked the field goal then we would have been driving for a game winning field goal after Houston took the lead in the fourth being down by 1 instead of 4. The turnover makes it a moot point.

You ALWAYS take the points up until the end of the game. We have proven that we can't make it 4th and one. I watched the Rams-Seahawk game and the Rams coach, Scott Linehan, didn't kick the field goal early in the fourth quarter from the Seahawks 6 yard line on a fourth and one. They ALSO lost by 2 points. Rarely have I seen ANY team make it successfully this year on a fourth and one. In almost all cases the successful coach has kicked the field goal. This not only puts points on the board, but keeps the momentum going as the players remain UP for the game.

Solid? - please get your little stat book out and tell me how many times we have been stuffed this year on 3rd and 4th and short. It's been A LOT.

I happen to agree with Stallion on this one. It was a combination of all three. So we should've kicked the damn FG.

agree stallion right--its probly all three. and on the talent issue, i talked with a houston fan and he told me aldridge was a 4.2 time former wide receiver expected to be the "change of pace" guy to the bigger back (who was also good). this guy has absolutely blazing speed and we couldn't catch him on 3 or 4 really long tds. sturdivant and hudman are both back there together because they are good tacklers, not becasue they are the fastest dbs we have. i think aldredge may be the fastest back we see this year. when our dbs got caught out of position (because we geared up to stop the uh passing game), we just couldn't run the guy down.

that is a talent issue. houston in fact won because they had one or two more difference makers than we had. on the bright side our dline did a nice job against them while heywood was in there for a half anyway. we are going to miss heywood next year.

so give the coogs credit. they made some adjustments and outplayed us in the second half. the answer to all you guys with the trash talk is the one they left on the scoreboard, and that's always the best one.

Try Haywood got hurt on the first Alridge touchdown giving him a massive hole to run through. That hole pretty much made our DL look like a buck-toothed hillbilly. Now Alridge accelerates faster than some of the UH fans' cars, so I definitely have to give him credit for that. But to say we were overprepared for the pass is crazy.
