yeah right first in school history. I wonder how we were even able to field a team before Justin led us to that glorius almost winning team.

He just asked a question. It's not like he said Willis is already the greatest player in the history of SMU or the universe or however it might have sounded to you. Since nobody today apparently is good enough, who DID win the award before Willis?

To be honest, I have never noticed Freshmen of the Year or Freshman All American awards prior to last year. They probably exisited but we had no one involved so they were not talked about. Of course Freshman were not eligible to play back in my days. I think it was sometime in the mid to late 70's when they opened it up for them. Have these type of teams been announced for that long?

off the top of my head players who were either freshman of the year or Newcomer of the Year before Freshmen were eligible include Doak Walker, Chuck Hixson, Wayne Morris, Charles Waggoner Tennell Atkins and probably ShanDerrick Charles. SMU had two Freshman of the Years in both Football and Basketball circa 1970 with Wayne Morris and Ira Terrell.

And I was freshman of the year in the annual Bolts v. Volts flag football game at the 1983 School of Engineering and Applied Science picnic. The Bolts really dominated that vaunted series during my time on the Hilltop.

ShanDerrick was actually not freshman of the year. He was in the same class as Chance Kretschmer from Nevada, who led the nation in rushing yards/game as a freshman and had one game where he ran for over 300 and 6 TDs.

newcomer of year...

in my memory, these type of awards are a recent event, so Doak, Chuck, ED, etc probably were not in any running for awards... the recent addition of awards - Doak Walker, Ray Guy, etc. are mostly from the last 10 -15 years.

No they've always had these awards for years. Maybe not for the Conference but from the media. I remember when I worked in the SIDs office for example the great LB Pete Collins was a Freshman All-American in 1978 or so before his tragic car crash before his sophmore year. Would have been the greatest LB in SMU History. (I know he played DE but he was being switched to LB). Collins and Moten would have been the greatest tandem of SMU LBs in SMU History.

My opinions bench 410 and have a 5.6 shuttle time. My opinions are considering offers from Notre Dame, Penn State and Miami. Also Stanford, where they have been told that can be two-sport opinions.

Your opinions need to work on that shuttle time. I seriously doubt that Notre Dame, Penn State and Miami offered if that time is accurate. Stanford, maybe, if in your opinion your grades are high enough.
