I disagree Mustangxc . . . simply because someone has success (ie Todd Graham) does not mean he is automatically looking to leave that success when something better comes along. Not all coaches fall into the Saban, Graham, etc mold...

I just heard this news after lunch and it makes me sick. The way these college coaches bounce around from school to school is ridiculous. I wouldnt be suprised is most or all of Rice's commitments make plans to go somewhere else. The HC at a school is one of the major factors a recruit looks at when deciding to play ball. He has left his players, especially his first year class high and dry. I wish him all the best of bad luck and maybe a flat tire or two on 35 going thru Dallas at rush hour.

damn. what a huge blow to the Owl program. I feel for them. To have the success that mustang fans envy, and then take off because you once worked for Tulsa is just plain wrong. At least now Rice will be in the C-USA cellar again and we can beat them next year at Ford and go bowling. Miles Brand needs to figure out how to stop coaches from bolting like this. Why would Miles Brand want to stop this? Aside from this somewhat lateral move by Graham, this is usually a product of the big fish feeding off the small fish (BCS vs. non-BCS). Brand knows where his bread is buttered and wants to make sure the "haves" have more and a tip of his hat to us...

it would be a violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act for the NCAA to limit Coaches salaries. NCAA has already been tagged with a huge judgment for attempting to limit I believe salaries on parttime coaches. Tulsa paid him 1.1 Million which Rice was unwilling to match.

While I feel for Rice's kids and fans, 1.1 MILLION DOLLARS a year for 8 years is a heck of an offer. I doubt any of us would have turned it down.
You get to be closer to your daughter and you are getting paid a butt load of cash. Not saying it is right, but that is hard to turn down.

But CDC said the invitation to counter-offer was politely declined, given the difference compensation levels -- even after the pay raise that was included in the contract renegotiation offer the former Rice coach told press he had accepted two days ago.

I'd say once again Rice just decided that Football really wasn't that important. TCU for example has decided it was at least in the past a raised Patterson's salary to the 1 Million area a few years ago.

Graham could have a problem with the law if Rice wanted to press it. The precedent was set by the Texaco-Pennzoil case. Remember that Pennzoil had come to agreement to purchase Getty Oil, but a final contract was never signed. Texaco came in as a white knight and bailed out Getty's management by purchasing them before the final signing. Pennzoil sued in Texas court (a BIG mistake by the arrogant Texaco legal staff not moving it to Delaware or New York) and Pennzoil won the case claiming that a champaign toast had sealed the deal! This shows that Texas justice can overcome contract law!
