uniformsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Blue jersey, red helmet, white mustangHayden Fry started out imitating the Doak Walker uniform, then evolved into the blue jersey, red helmet with white mustang logo. Fry never dropped the gray pants and should have used the white style adoped by Ron Myer. In the psychology of color, blue is the color of achievement. Nuff said.

I told Orsini to please go back to Pony Express uniforms. I told him how would you like it if Notre Dame dropped the gold helmet and he said "Heck No" . He told me he likes the old uniforms better too. This was last September though.
Re: Blue jersey, red helmet, white mustang
And are you saying that SMU jinxed it?
I think the Pony Express era uniforms (which were a Ron Meyer brainchild), were the best ever. I didn't like the Red helmets with the white horse because they looked just like the Arkansas helmets except with a horse instead of a pig. I hated the Dave Smith helmets. I think the white helmets with the Red horse just stood out on the field. The blue jerseys and the white pants just looked classic (like Penn State). Penn State still has white helmet's with a simple number on the side. ND a simple gold helmet. Nebraska white with a simple N on it. UT white with a ugly barf orange steer on it. None of those schools would change their helmet why should we? Heck, Bennett should know, the Aggies have kept the same helmet for decades. Then again, maybe our football team should take a cue from the band and change uniforms at halftime.
IMHO we don't have a uniform now or in the past that would stand the test of time like a ND or Penn State (btw, PSU doesn't have numbers on the side of the helmet, only the stripe down the middle). We've changed our uniforms many times, and I really don't think any of the past uniforms could stand the test of time, most were functions of the styles of that specific time, including this past year's models.
My main beef with our current uniforms is that the blue is darker than the "Yale Blue" that is our school color. If we don't use our school colors, then what's the point in having them? I think it's important to look for something that won't be a fad or out of style in a few years, but rather something that we could build a tradition around for years to come. IMHO none of our past uniforms fit this mold. I am also interested to know how much input the school has in designing these uniforms. In basketball next year several schools that are supplied by Nike will be wearing skin tight tops and even baggier bottoms (as seen on PTI this week). I've seen what these look like and don't know how anyone could voluntairly pick these. I wonder if the manufacturer can just say "Here you're wearing these" and how much input the school has. If anyone knows, please enlighten. Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!
I disagree - I think the Pony Express era (and early 1990s) uniforms were singularly indentifiable, and the white helmet with the Mustang on the side was one of the easiest to identify in the country. Of course, maybe my reaction here is more emphatic because you just said we don't stack up, uniform-wise, against two of the schools I despise as much as any in the country, for whatever that's worth.
Who really gives a damn if we wear our exact school colors. SMU's uniforms in the 1980s were recognized in several rankings as among the best in the country-and even our opponents loved them and wonder why the hell we changed. Our current uniforms looked like they were designed by an Aggie. I mean who goes out wearing dark blue on dark red. The two colors compete. with the Royal Blue Jersey and white helmut and Red Mustang they compliment each other. Every body and their dog wears Red-SMU had unique uniforms that distinguished SMU from every other team in the Country. The old uniforms highlited the RED MUSTANG-which was probably one of the most distinguishing marks in College athletics. Its not the uniform's fault we suck. Now SMU is just like the 50 other teams wearing Red. I have little doubt that if you polled SMU's alumni that the 1980s uniforms would be the easy favorite. Plus the fans who really feel strongly about this issue overwhelmingly favor the 1980s Blue uniforms-just scroll above.
I remember one dufus ran for political office and had blue signs with red lettering. No one could read them. Why? Because if you look at one of those light charts red and blue are right next to each other. The naked eye has difficulty differentiating the two colors without contrast of white, silver or gray. And we know the helmets were designed by an Aggie. Perhaps someone from the arts school will enlighten him.
So? A ranking can be found to support a lot of things. Some website - I forget which - ranked SMU's current threads last year as one of the top five in the country. Nonetheless, I agree with you and damn-near everyone on this thread: royal blue jerseys/white helmet (but with the BLUE mustang) was my all-time favorite. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Throw me into the pro-80's style uniforms camp. I can't agree more with Stallion.
When I think our recent uniforms, I am struck by the fact they reminded me of other teams' uniform or had the same styling as other teams' uniforms. The 80's uniforms stood out as unique right down to the red and blue stripes on the pants. Classic and classy. An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and
doesn't care who wins. -- Dwight D. Eisenhower
While I agree that I do like the 80's unis the best, I file this subject in the "things I can do nothing about so do not go crazy about it" file. I just hope the insides of the uniforms are worthy of whatever they turn out to be.
Stallion, you've assumed facts not in evidence, a big no-no for a lawyer as you well know. If you could cite examples of "uniform rankings" or opponents who admitted they loved our uniforms that would help your argument.
You're also missing the point. I'm not saying that this year's uniforms were the way to go, or that the '80s uniforms sucked, rather that we need to come up with something that will stand the test of time, and in my OPINION we haven't had anything like that yet. The '80s uniforms were good, but I think we can come up with something better. Hopefully we will. PonyPride, I understand your emphasis in your response, as I'm not a big fan of Penn State or ND either. Here's to those that wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!!!
KISS Method of uniform design:
- First, red Mustang on dark navy helmet has always been hard to distinguish, even with the added white outline. Answer, White helmets with red Mustang and blue/red strips down the center. - Next, add royal blue jerseys along with white for the road and red, on rare occasion - Third, white pants with red/blue stripes always. Never blue on blue or red on red. Skip grey option. - SMU can and should be more committed to a traditional look. Our FB legacy should be branded in our fans and the media's mind. Our recent past, combined with a plethora of uniforms, distracts from a clear and consistent message, e.g. we are back to stay, period. Minimally, get rid of navy helmets, but I like the above solution. ![]() Pony Up
