The rule is only inforced when there is a complaint by the team. We did not complain against Baylor thus they were not penalized nor did they have to stop. And, I doubt that Coach Bennett would complain about not hearing the signals if our band played during our offensive drives. As in the past, you play quietly during the signal calling and loudly during the play. You also could play while the other team has the ball until a complaint or if the official can determine you are disturbing the other teams play calling.
Graphic! GO MUSTANGS!
FIGHT ON!
I can imagine it now. . . The Mustang Band goes from 'the best dressed band in the land' to the 'least dressed band in the land.' They don their uniforms for pregame and halftime shows, but lose them during the game. That's not a pretty picture. Excellence is not an act but a habit. Aristotle
As pointed out by others, the only way to determine if the band has actually (not tried to, not intended to) "prohibits its team from hearing its signals" is if the team calling the signals complains about not being able to hear its signals. The tradition was to play ON THE OFFENSE loudly until the huddle formed, then play very softly until the snap and then get very very loud. It is extremely unlikely that if this tradition were followed, our own team would complain about not being able to hear its signals over the top of softly playing Peruna. And by extremely unlikely, I mean, it WOULDN'T HAPPEN. NO REF IS GOING TO CALL THIS WITHOUT COMPLAINT.
If this subjective rule is what we've been basing the "no play" thing on (as opposed to "saving the chops for halftime" which is (1) unacceptable and (2) wussy), then we are WAY over applying the rule. Good news for me, and for you (unless you just plain disagree with my musical taste and opinions), is that I've been invited to participate in a committee to discuss music at our athletic events. So I will be heard on this issue. I think I know what the concensus of the fans here is.
Give us more SMU Band and less canned music...thank you.
Git 'r done! Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
Sir, that was one of the best games I've ever seen as far as BACK and FORTH, who's gonna win this game sort of game. Also, the Matt Vogler vs. David Klingler 650 yards passing vs 700 yards passing TCU - HOU game is right up there...
Don't forget that defenses also call plays and could complain about the band playing too loud for them to hear their signal calling.
This "STUPID, STUPID", poorly worded, subjective rule has our athletic department on egg shells. It is time for Orsini and Sweet to let SMU football return to SMU. Let the band play Peruna behind the visiting team bench until they hear it in their minds for days after the game. Visiting teams use to hate playing SMU because they knew this was going to happen. We have to get in their heads when they play in our house. It is called home field advantage and we must make Ford the absolute worst place for visiting teams to play. Just send 'da money.
The best example I've seen of a band 'getting into the opponents head' is Tennessee. They even played over the Notre Dame band at Notre Dame. Rocky Top and the preamble to Rocky Top (where they spell V-O-L-S) lingers like the odor from dog s$$$ on the bottom of your shoe.
I remember playing somebody this year (maybe it was Houston), their band kept playing what sounded like a train on kickoffs and other times during the game. It was annoying as hell. That's the way a band should be.
Unfortunately, they were doing it on our field and our band wasn't really doing anything. "He was quoting the Bible, Revelations. 'Behold the pale horse.' The man who 'sat on him was Death... and Hell followed with him.'"
"You tell 'em I'm coming... and hell's coming with me!"
