Martin needs to play like that on a regular basis if he wants to be a "premier TB".....one performance as in the TCU game does not make for a "premier TB".........

That performance, along with almost his entire freshman year is vindicative of what he CAN be for SMU. Of course he would have to perform like that on a regular basis, but his play against TCU shows you that he CAN be that type of back for us, that he can be a premier TB.

he never displayed NFL speed even in his freshman season. We heard alot that he had improved his speed to the 4.45 range last summer but never saw it because of the injury. I believe Martin can be the best RB we've has since the DP (excluding shooting star Charles) if healty-but I still have never seen breakaway speed. 20-30 yards yes-but I don't think we've seen him run away from DBs like the kid at Houston for example.

Hate to be negative, but Martin isn't even being considered the feature back by Bennet anymore. Everything I have read said he will start but be rotated with four or so other runners...

SMU has good runners, but they aren't great. And to consider Martin at the moment an NFL caliber back is way premature if he can't 100% beat out the rest of the stable. Of course he does have two more years to make me eat crow.

I'll take 20-30 yard scampers over 2 yards and a cloud of dust any day.

At Rice I would have been happy with 1 yard and a pile of plastic.

Hopefully Martin will step up and show that the is "the TB" this year. A top notch TB needs to get 25-30 carries per game and they tend to run better the more "into the flow" they get. How many teams do well that play 4 TB's per game?

You have brought back a memory of the game that Texas had all 4 starting backs over 100 yards each against us. 2 TBs, a FB and a QB in the wishbone.

Heck I'd take Eric Dickerson by his senior year. I remember the Tulane game where he got late hit by the Tulane safety. The next play they ran right at the safety, ED just cleaned his clock. The guy was all wobbly afterward and ED just smiled. Wouldn't mind seeing some of that attitude.

Martin is around 6'2 230. He needs to develope some toughness, and mabey a little nastiness. Craig James was pretty critical of him in the UAB game, for not keeping his legs moving upon contact, and running soft.

As others have said, DeMyron's a very exciting back when he's on. Physically he reminds me of Dickerson. And he was the TCU killer the last time we played. He's young and has some football in front of him. He was highly recruited and here's hoping the stars align and he can prove to be up to the task.

He's not that young, he is a 4th year junior.

I'm concerned he added too much weight too fast. And he doesn't remind me of Dickerson at all.
I'm concerned he added too much weight too fast. And he doesn't remind me of Dickerson at all.
.............I have to agree with you on this Stallion. Dickerson found an opening or created one quickly. Dickerson would be in high gear as he got the ball and did not hesitate at all unless he had to change directions. He kept his legs moving all the time, was tough and fast. That is what Great/Good backs do.... Frankly, Mapps may only have 4.5/4.6 speed, but he gets going quickly and upfield in a hurry. He is a good tough little back with great moves but he is small and if he was the starter, he would have to split some time with Dorsey/Martin.....Martin is certainly the best blocker of the group. If his speed has improved, he has the talent/size if he can make it happen. Like Craig James said (whether you like it or not), Martin needs some "nastiness" and he has to keep those legs moving until he is down.

IMO, Mapps needs to play a big role in the offense. I think he is the only back that is a home run threat. No he doesn't run a 4.3 , but he can flat out make people miss. He doesn't need 30 carries a game, but I think if we got demyron 20 carries and mapps 10 that would be a good combo.
