Look for a format change mid-season when Phil is shown the door...and someone tell him not to slouch

Unfortunately, sometimes optimism is only as beneficial as the team you are optimistic about is good.
I doubt he'd be fired during the season, but I can envision a situation where it could be considered.

While it isn't exactly common for coaches to be let go during the season, I too could see a situation where it would happen.
Realisticaly, you would have to say that Tech and TCU are likely losses. UNT whooped us pretty good at their place last year so I would not think it would be unreasonable to think we could lose to them at home this season, although I predict a a victory for the Ponies. Which means we could very well lose all three of those games even though we aren't really playing bad ball. Throw in one awful game at ASU (remember we were 1-5 on the road last season) and we start off the season 0-4. An 0-4 start to your supposed soon to be bowl year, including losses to your two DFW rivals and a bad team in ASU, and you better believe he could be fired after the TCU game.
With that said I don't think we will start 0-4. Bennett will try to remember as much of all that football he has forgotten as he can for his save face game vs UNT. Also, while I might be sunshining, I think we have a real shot against Tech in the opener and we certainly should beat ASU on the road.
I guess we will find out in a couple of months huh?

Three points:
1) I believe that we will improve this year and in improving get to a bowl game. If this comes to pass, Phil stays.
2) It's really, really, really sad when you have SMU fans predicting that Phil will be shown the door at mid season given the improvement we showed last year.
3) There's no way a kneejerk pessimist of the kind that has been dominating conversation around here for some time could understand optimism and excitement anyway, so I'm not really sure why I'm wasting time typing this.

Re: ponyboy's three points:
1) I agree if we go to a bowl this year, Bennett keeps his gig.
2) I hope he's not attributing any predictions to me, as I have made none.
3) I understand optimism and excitement perfectly, which is why I submit realists cannot afford to have either when it comes to this program. No expections will lead no disappointments, only pleasant surprises. Oh, and kneejerk pessimists are far from dominating the conversation on the sunshine board.
I still want to drink his beer on the 'vard though.

That's not true at all. You, Stallion and others have patrolled this board and dominated discussions ever since your realist board folded. This has not been a sunshine board for a long, long time. Which is why guys like Patton are having to wear helmets.
Anyway, you got that beer. Looking forward to the season.

If you want to eat, then go get something from the fridge.
Again, wide ranging panic reigning all over this board.
I say we exhume the body of Roy Orbison and have him sing:
It's Over, It's Over, It's Over!!

I just don't get it. It's almost a form of self-flagelation not to enjoy the hope and promise of a new year. Must've been some pretty sorry childhoods out there.

And you must still leave cookies for Santa every year. Some people eventually grow out of the ever hopefull state of childhood into a more realistic adulthood.

Yes, stating that Bennett is going to be fired at midseason isn't realistic, it's pessimistic. There is a difference.
