These are American kids, and a good deal are from Texas. They like football, plain and simple. You get 10 of them around a TV and we're winning a football game, and they'll go crazy just like 95% of people out there. Watching the Tulane game last year with friends in the dorm, they all went nuts over Henderson's kick return.
Maybe this just shows how far we've fallen...going nuts over beating Tulane, but the fact remains that if this team wins, people will show, people will cheer, people will love it. They don't not show because they don't like football, they don't show because we suck. And for a college football fan, there are better games each Saturday than the one played on campus.
Its a luxury to have a nice stadium on campus, too bad more students don't fall out of bed and take advantage of it. Much better than having to take a beer bus to Texas Stadium! People who would rather sit on the couch in front of the TV all day should probably just do that. I'm sure there will be a Michigan, Penn State or Whorn game for them to watch. Personally, I would rather be outside on a beautiful day, with friends and family enjoying the Blvd and watching football in our own stadium (regardless of the outcome). But I understand its not for everybody.
And don't students road trip anymore? I have such fond memories of plastering Mustang Mania stickers on the road signs down I-35. Gee, I just realized I'm really old... ![]() Pony Up!
I road tripped to several games in my time, but gas prices, speeding ticket/open container ticket potential, and constant humiliating losing makes that get old real quick.
as a student, i have no desire to drive even 45 mins to Fort Worth to get harassed by frogie nation and then have to fight traffic in a pissed off mood because of poor play. you wont see me in tulsa or any other away games.
however, i will never miss a home game. theres no excuse to skip a home game ![]()
For $12, you could have ridden the bus to TCU, skipped the traffic and had free beer. And I don't recall being harrassed by any frogs...but that's the benefit of being old---smack from drunk college kids doesn't really bother me....

Hey can you really blame the students. When I went to SMU and we took the bus to the Cotton Bowl we always left at halftime and went back to the bus and drank beer then showed up a lot louder about the middle of the third quarter. We can't do that now. so if you are a fan and think the game is well in hand and want to go back tothe boulevard and party you are SOL unless you have another ticket. I am seriously considering not renewing my four season tickets for this very reason. Not because of the team. Aren't we the ones supporting the program, why are we being dictated to.
I suggest you e-mail Shawn McGee, Asscc Athletic Director -Sales at [email protected] and voice your displeasure. You might also ask why Mr McGee can't sell more tickets! Russ Potts figured it out!!!!
Second week this year the SMU student section has graced the pages of the SI superfan section.

they must have been desperate for superfans. the empty seats in the back detract from the superfans, in my opinion

Hell...that's ALL of the students that were still in the Student Section during the 2nd half of the UTEP game. I counted 'em! ![]()
If you're going to cancel your season tickets because you can't get drunk at half time, maybe you should carry a flask. Just a thought. Pony Up!
Then again is it fair to say that athletics department anywhere have control over their athletes? We get in trouble but hell, there's athletes out there not at SMU doing worse (or maybe not necessarily worse) things...it boils down to whether or not they're dumb or obvious enough to get caught in my opinon ![]()
Uh, it probably ALSO has to do with self control and motivation. I'm not sure how many players are at SMU with stars in their eyes and dreams of NFL one day. However, I can guarantee you that those are the kids more likely to get some rest before a big game and act as an example in the public eye. The ones who just want a scholarship cuz they were grown bigger than the rest of us and love lifting weights? Yeah, I doubt that when the opportunity to go to a frat party, get drunk, and bang a kappa rolls around on a friday night they're thinking about the playbook...
