So a football coach's candidacy for the job should be affected by what happened in the basketball office? I've had some inane ideas before but that one is up there with the best of them.
It's not a department thing; it's an SMU thing. How many black coaches do we have? All I'm saying is that SMU should give very serious consideration to hiring a black head football coach for obvious reasons--like our reputation in the real world, not the bubble of UP/HP.
I hear what you're saying, Nacho, and appreciate the good intentions. There seem to be quite a few qualified candidates out there who also happen to be black. We absolutely need to consider them -- to ignore that pool would be stupid. But we also need to hire the best man for the job regardless of incidentals such as the color of his skin. If he happens to be black, I'm all for it.
If Copeland didn't want to hire him in the first place (as I have been told) then I don't know why he did. If he later wanted to fire him he could have said it wasn't working out. End of story. I can tell you that no one I have talked to outside of SMU believes this burgers/Cheer thing. We look very bad because of it. That said if Bowden wants to come to SMU I am all for it. If he doesn't then you have to seriously look at a minority candidate. Even then they may hire someone else if he is the right guy. That is up to Orsini.
Nacho, so which are you: An ignorant black person or an ignorant white person? Are you saying that the black community would only get behind a BLACK coach? (Seems like you're accusing the black community of racism.) Are you saying that SMU would somehow soil (perhaps further) its reputation if it hired a white coach, even if it's not Bowden? Jeez, you people who bring race into things make me sick. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
First, we hire the best candidate we can get to come here, no matter of race. Certainly, if a quality black coach like a Ty Willingham, Doug Williams, or Lovie Smith (as if) applies or is slightly interested, we ought to give those candidates strong consideration. If they are equal to other serious candidates, then we ought to consider them. We need the best coach available (and if its Phil Bennett, then he should stay).
Since you obviously dislike Bowden because you perceive he has a weight problem, and assuming Bennett won't be able to win enough to save himself, who do you thnk is a worthy target for the open head coaching position?
That should have been the first and last post in this thread.
I will f**king laugh my [deleted] off at you if he comes out and wins the next 5-6 games. I will be rolling, because then we go to a bowl in this crap conference, have a good chance at winning the west in this crap conference, and your buddy Phil will definitely be back next year! Not that it's gonna happen. Damn that would be funny. So shutup. He loses 7 he's gone. We know that, you know that, Phil knows that, Jesus knows that. So quite peddling the same boring crap about him getting fired. I think the world might know his seats a little warm by now.
Just talked to my neighbor here in PHX. He used to live in Dallas. Say's racism is rampant. It's probably everywhere to a degree. SMU even made it in Brokeback Mountain as basically a white, straight rich kids school. I still love the program. However the school needs to change it's image. This is abhorrent to me and most of America. How the UMC allowed this to happen is even more disheartening. Would Syracuse be talking about a white or black coach? You folks in Texas need to start representing yourselves to the country as a Methodist University and not a place unto yourselves. This is a NATIONAL UNIVERSITY. I honestly hope you can LIVE UP to that. Please, live up to that. My family nor I gave $ to allow it to go to something that needs to be buried. Do any of you think I want to be branded as racist because I wear an SMU hat or shirt?
