Three things. First, The BCS is a TERRIBLE system. It is still in place because there is enough money being made that schools are still happy enough not to try something new. Second, one reason bowls are winning out to playoffs in college football still is that coaches and, ummm, presidents, like the fact that they dont all have to end the yr with a loss. third, my proposal is designed to encourage teams to play big time non-conf games. USC v LSU anyone? Georgia v Texas? It would take winning one of those to be a contender for an at large bid if you cant get out of your conference alive, but a loss wouldnt eliminate you from contention - just win your conference. Finally (i need more than 3), most of the bowl matchups are pretty bad.
are you really trying to say its the BCS' fault for the way the year as played out? obviously NO ONE wants to be crowned FBS champion
My playoff scenario:
#1 LSU vs #8 Hawaii #4 OSU vs #5 VTech #2 USC vs #7 WVa #3 OU vs #6 GA OSU has to earn the right to get LSU in round 2 USC & OU have to earn the right to the title game
Seems to be generally in line with the DMN's proposal - http://colleges.beloblog.com/archives/2 ... e_bcs.html I would approve for this year, but long term we need a 16 team playoff, including 11 conference champs and 5 at large
i do agree on this...but itll take a realignment of ALL conferences...and each conference needs to play a title game also.
I think a 16-team playoff would be big enough. Let's be honest, does anyone think the 17th or 24th ranked team could win it all? Maybe in a fluke year, but the top 16 is plenty to determine a champion.
At the other levels in the NCAA, the preliminary rounds are held on campus and then the championship game at a neutral site (FCS at Chattanooga, TN, DII at Florence, Ala. and DIII at Salem, Virginia). The idea of using the bowls for the playoff games sounds good until you realize the travel that would be involved for the fans. There's not many fans who can afford to travel all over the country during the month of December to follow their team. Also, using the bowls does nothing to reward the higher-seeded teams. Unfortunately, as others have said, as long as the BCS cartel is in charge (and the Rose Bowl continues to be married to their PAC-10, Big-10 matchup), we're not going to see a playoff in FBS.
