Many seem to think Johnson would run the same triple-option attack he uses in Annapolis, but I know he would adapt his offense to the personnel at whatever school he worked at. That's what good coaches do. And, make no doubt about it: Johnson is a good coach.

I'll have to take you word for it-- our HC did not believe in adapting... period.

Sometimes I wonder...

Postby PonyFan32 » Thu Nov 29, 2007 7:55 pm

It seems like sometimes on here we forget to rate the product on the field and evaluate what the new coach (using Paul Johnson as a hypothetical here) would do with our current talent. People are so chaotically worried about PJ's defensive stats and I'm not too knowledgable on that so I wont speak on that but... I do think he is a proven good head coach. And that means a lot in our current situation. If you watched any of our games this year (I watched every home game and kept abreast of nearly all of the away games) you could see that we are simply a good coach away from being a bowl team. With C-USA not being terribly amazing, we could have very easily won at least half of our games this year. And I think simply being a smart coach able to manage a game makes a huge difference. I went into every overtime this year believing we were going to lose because of poor play calling or discipline or execution or whatever. I think a solid coach will help us win most of the close games, especially the ones on the road.

Lets be honest... we should have beaten UTEP, Tulane and Rice outright. No excuses. And most of the others were winnable games. We scored as many offensive touchdowns as TCU. We were leading Tulsa and whoever else I cant remember. The only games I think were out of hand were Tech, UCF, and Southern Miss. And of course for the bazillionth time in a row we did awful on the road. We dont have the killer instinct that smells blood and goes after the win. I think PJ can change that and thats why I think we can go bowling consistently fairly soon with him as HC.

That doesnt mean I dont want a good defense of course. I hated the way we played defense this year. That was awful.

C'mon JT. So the kid had a tough year fumbling the football with a busted up hand. Get off the fumbling thing, it is over. JWill can run any offense you throw at him. Orsini knows what he has with the talent at SMU. Probably why he meets with JWill and Morestead on a consistent basis about the coaching prospects. We have our leaders on this team. The team knows who they are, the AD knows who they are and the rest of the college world knows who they are. Now you must realize that whoever the coach, JWill will run the offense reagardless. I never heard any boos other than yours.

Baby him? The kid played all year with a broken hand, tweaked groin and slight concussion, and you are talking about babying him. PJ will kiss the ground JWill walks on because he will give him the competitive edge he needs. The fumbling will stop because JWill will know when he is suppose to run the ball. He had maybe two games of fumbling bumbling and you forger what he has brought to this University. Pony Up 2112.

Biggin,
I agree, I think JWILL would do great in Johnson's offense.

It's amazing how a kid (Willis) can play his heart out all year long, having to basically carry the team on his shoulders and all some of you can remember are the fumbles. With any defense at all and some pass blocking do you really think he would feel the need to make every first down and every big play himself? Come on guys give the kid some credit!

Tap the brake there, buddy. Could you use another adjective? He has quarterbacked 7 wins in 2 seasons. Maybe the new commander will bring a QB with him and release JW to go play at Sam Houston or SFA.

If good intentions are the measure of success, then Caven and Bennett are still our coaches. Does everyone truly believe that SMU has never had a kid play hurt? Or play with everything the kid had? Does anyone truly believe that Lance McIlhenny didn't play with all he had or play hurt? Ramon Flannigan was known to play hurt and hard. As did Hixson.

The measure of success isn’t some derivative of fumbles with a coefficient of injuries and good intentions as a norming factor. Success is the number of times one doesn’t fumble.

I think PJ and Willis would be a match made in football heaven. I think Willis’ potential could be exponentially increased with a PJ type offense. I also think that Willis needs QB discipline to reduce mistakes and that includes fumbles.

There have been coaches at SMU that absolutely would not tolerate turnovers. Ask Mike Ford if Meyers had a tolerance for fumbles and interception.

I 2nd that agree...All you old men need to shut up and look at what we have...We haven't sniffed a real QB since Flanagan...Willis can play...He is a winner...We all know this...Look at his offensive stats...I believe he did all of that in spite of the fact the offenese was flawed...Plays broke down, coverages stunk, Rusty's play calling was terrible...

If Johnson comes, we will see a polished Willis...Willis won't see pine, he will see wins...

Berg, is that where you played? Or did you even play organized sports? Great was the wrong word to use, so how about the greatest QB in the history of SMU football. Numbers speak for themselves. Win and loses are a team effort. How about just putting him out there by himself. Now JWill gets credit for the wins and loses. You are giving him too much credit Berg.

u are a dumba$$! Maybe he will bring Chris Phillips, Josh McCown(smu version), Richard Bartel(SMU version),etc. Would u like that? Without Justin this team wouldn't have even been 1 yard from a bowl game last season. He and Sanders brought this offense out of its perpetual tank. They both struggled this season.

Justin had a bad year in terms of turnovers this season but he showed last season that he is capable of taking care of the ball. He just needs to be coached back up. :x

25 passing TD's, lead the team in rushing, and I think 4600 yards of total offense. Coached back up aint the key. He needs some HELP and his hand to completely heal.
