I was 13 and a huge fan of Wayne Morris, Dave Bostic, Oscar Roan and Large Louie Kelcher and it was the first football game I actually sat down and watched all the way through without jumping up and running off to explore the Cotton Bowl or buy a Dr. Pepper. Something about the way Ricky Wesson ran that Wishbone.

It was a couple of days after Thanksgiving and we had about 30 family members in the Cotton Bowl for that one. Just a great memory.

I was there for that one, too. Louie Kelcher dominated them. And it was added sweetness that I think the College Station Morons were ranked #2 at the time.

82 SMU - Arkansas. SWC championship, and Cotton Bowl on the line, 2 top ten teams, sold out TX Stadium, and a national TV audience was there to see it all. The 17 - 17 result was the only tie that felt like a win to me.

Loudest Stadium I've ever been in.

My greatest moment was the result of an SMU win. After the 80 UT game (SMU 20-UT 6) on the team bus returning to Dallas, we pass a UT decorated van. It was a full sized customized van that was popular then. It had the Longhorn symbol on the spare tire and the appropriate colors. The van was driven by a middle aged guy and the passenger seat had a little old blue haired lady in it. I would guess she was 70 to 75 years of age. The players all lined one side of the bus and were giving the UT van the downward hook 'em horns sign. The driver, gave a not to enthusiastic wave and the little old lady just glared up at us. Her jaw set forward with an aged scowl on her faced. Suddenly, with cat like reflexes, she raised her right hand and shaking her hand with a mighty anger, gave us the finger.

As I age and lose my memory, I may well forget my family member's name but I will never forget that old bitty giving the victorious SMU Mustangs the finger.

SMU vs UT 1985. Thanks RGV for putting it on You Tube. I believe it was the longest play from scrimmage in school history until Briggs 96 yard TD. We also beat Todd Dodge that day. I think we now have a two game winning streak against him.

I also remember the tip pass that Bobby Leach caught against Texas A and M in Texas Stadium to beat them 28-20. Does anyone else remember that play?

These responses speak to the dichotomy called SMU football.

I attended when SMU was the winningest team in all of college football. I got to see real players play meaningful games at sold-out stadiums.

My Top 50 would include NO GAMES played during the past 20 years and I have seen a few during that time.

Best is SMU defeat of UT in Austin in '82.

And for the record, ponyte was instrumental in the greatest play in SMU history. I hope you remember that as well as the bitty.

1980 (at least that was the one with the Ponyte block).

US whipper-snappers would appreciate hearing of Ponyte's heroics. It was just a little before my time (mid 80's)

I remember as a 6 year old going to an SMU practice (because my dad knew Hayden Fry) at Ownby and getting to play catch with Jerry LeVias. How cool was that?

As far as games, fast forward to 1980, when SMU's upset win in Austin meant I got to "call the activities of the evening" with my UT date. UT was ranked #2 in the nation, so when she made the bet there is NO WAY she ever thought she'd have to pay off. For that evening, I will always thank Lance McIlhenny and Craig James.

Dittos. That was great. Rainy, cold day, if I recall. I think the Aggies were No. 4 in the country.

Don't remember it as real rainy, but it was cloudy, and cold. Maybe I
was under the upper deck in the student section in Cotton Bowl.

An added bonus was the A$M band messed up the T formation at
halftime. One wing of the T lagged 10 - 15 yards behind the rest of the
band.

Extra added bonus was that Baylor came from behind, and beat Texas
for the first time in decades.

I was 4. The 1983 (1982 season) Cotton Bowl. Other than that, Dickerson's tear away jerseys are some of my earliest memories. Plus the fact that I like Craig James better only because everybody else liked Dickerson better... that kind of thing has been a prevailing thing in my life, liking something else just because the masses liked the other.

Also, playing football in the empty lot across the street and demanding that we were the mini Mustangs versus the mini Longhorns, and wordlessly singing the fight song every time we scored. Ahh, pre-DP days..... [sigh]

Recent/True memories? That win over TCU in aught five was damned sweet.
