Though Mason said he was content to finish his career with the Bulldogs and expressed much thanks for his time at Fresno State, he said he was drawn to SMU to become a defensive coordinator again and to the school's renewed commitment to winning with Jones at the helm.
Mason, who last worked as a defensive coordinator at Nevada in 1999, said he will make almost double his current salary -- climbing from $104,000 a year as a Fresno State assistant to $180,000 in base pay as an SMU coordinator.
"It's one of those situations that's tough to pass," Mason said. "I hate leaving Fresno State. I'm not a good move-around type of guy. But it's a great opportunity in this profession, and it's great for my family.
"SMU wants to crank that program up again. ... They're spending the money to support the program the right way."
Mason is credited for developing Marcus Riley, who was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season, in addition to a handful of others who lacked the prototypical size for a linebacker but flourished anyway.
Mason also was a key recruiter for the Bulldogs in the Sacramento area, having locked up players such as former cornerback Marcus McCauley and receiver Adam Jennings, both of whom played significant roles at Fresno State before moving on to the NFL.
Mason said he received a voice message from Jones last month asking if he'd be interested in becoming the SMU defensive coordinator.
The two coaches had exchanged messages until they finally spoke Feb. 3.
By Thursday, the day after national signing day, Mason was in Dallas for an on-campus interview. By Saturday night, he was offered the job.
"It's a good situation to join because you've got stability, you have a chance to win because of the [base] recruiting area [of Dallas and of Texas], and I'm working with good guys," Mason said. "They're showing that they'll do whatever it takes to support it and get them back in the Top 25.
