Worst D1A Defense I Have Ever Seen

RnS: a 3 and out puts the defense back on the field, D gets winded, etc. Scout team can't duplicate a strong D1A running game for 1st team defense.

Warbow, the Lempa & Lumpkin defenses at Hawaii were exactly equal to talent of defensive personnel. Glanville and Reinbold brought in athletes and started to right the ship. In JJs first year, they were several high caliber athletes McMackin had to work with, NFL starters. McMackins defense is adjustment based and focused on generating turnovers, without a main emphasis on yards allowed. von Appen was full of [deleted], and didn't have a clue in most areas of life. Can't even say he was a nice guy.

Jack Pardee on the other hand had very good defenses.

Just two twenty minute scrim's a week for the D against the scout team to get the timing and tackling technique sharp would help. Cant do this on D with just dummies and hold pads.

Last year that one pass play cost us one 75yd TD and almost 200 yds. against TT. It was open all year as the coaching staff never adjusted. The defense will slowly improve because it requires more coordination. We've seen some personnel changes and we will see more as the season progresses. DC Mason doesn't have the horses he needs. I don't like the "Give him a fair trial and lynch him" attitude we sometimes exhibit. Lets recognize the product we have and understand it's going to be improved. I've been a mustang fan since I was 7yrs old in 1949. I first saw them WIN in1975. PATIENCE.

Hey cowboy the 48-49 SMU teams I saw play were not bad.

As I said, JJ wants to simply outscore the opponents. He might consider a few series of DeMyron Martin runs against Tech, just to play with their heads a bit and give his D a few minutes to catch their breath. Otherwise, Tech could very well score 100 against us. I agree with why the Run N' Shoot contributes to bad D due to quick strike and 3 and outs. Hopefully there will be fewer three and outs and more long drives featuring play control passing with an occasional bomb to keep the corners and safeties honest.
