During a roast that SMU had for Meredith back in the 80's he made light of the NCAA violations saying, "If you are gonna go buy football players you need to get good'uns." Or something to that effect. Lots of nervous laughter ensued. Mt. Vernon is still proud of their favorite son.

Dandy Don Meredith a ... TEASIPPER?

Bear Bryant once said of Meredith "he's too good to play for anybody but ME!"

I remember one MNF, when Howard was going on and on about Donnie Anderson (former TTU) and then Greenbay running back, when Dandy Don looked over at Cossel and said, "well he might be something big up here Howard, but in Dallas he is simply known as Billy Bob Harris roomate"--Billy Bob was one of the most famous bachelors in Dallas in the 70's and still does the daily market update on KRLD every morning. Of course no one except those of us still in school or still single had a clue what Don was talking about.

Rumor has it that Meredith led the last successful panty raid on campus.

define "Success"

I know one night, I think it might have been New Years Eve, he was caught escorting Jane Mansfield through the Chapparel Club (one of two places to eat downtown in the old Southland Life bldg.) It was a heck of a deal back then for a 20 year old college student.

From NFL Films The Sound Track - Hero's of the 60's. I can't find it on the internet -

"The hero's of the sixties, like the game itself, seem larger than life size"...Don Meredith in the huddle, " Now I want you to listen to me and listen good, cause this is what we are gonna do. We're gonna run the ball; we're gonna pass the ball; we're goin' right down this field and we gonna score." cue Ramblin' Man from Grambling.

I was hoping someone would post that one. Love it!

THis is trivia question but I don't have the answer, or at leat not all of it. Maybe someone still has a Texas Football file and can check for the answers.

According to Texas Football there were half a dozen - six - really good HS quarterbacks in Texas the year Meredith was a senior. One of hem e was Meredith, of course, and Charlie Milstead at Tyler was another. Milstead did go to A & M. I believe that Bobby Lackey who went to UT was another. I want to say that Lackey was from the valley. TCU recruited two of them including a player named John Bonnet and I don't remember anything else about him. I don't remember the names of the last two at all.

Can anybody help? What were the names of the last two players and where did they go to HS? And who besides Meredith was important to his college team as a senior?

Weslaco's stadium is Bobby Lackey Stadium, so there you go on him.

There was a 2A team from Center TX, that had four players that played in college. The best was a quarterback that tore his achilles and later dropped out of A&M, named Bub Harris, two of the players later played in the NFL, one was Del Shofner (sp?). Could he be the one you were thinking of?

I read the same report-one of the other kids went to Rice and I think the other went to Baylor.

Here you go-I did a search for Meredith Lackey Rice Baylor and SMU and the article popped up first on Google-a wonderful thing. Should be on pages starting at 87.

I went through the thread without finding this story although I suppose it could be in one of the linked articles. Its another MNF story where Meredith got off a good line.

The camera man found a cute girl, a blond, and she was totally unaware she had a national audience. Her nose started itching and she picked her nose. Dead silence in the broadcast booth. No oohs and aahs. Finally, meredith said, "Well, no body is perfect."

This is a funny story, not a tribute to Meredith, but perhaps a measure of his popularity was that the joke was not on Dandy Don, but rather one on of his team mates. It happened about 1957.

There was a large English class held in an auditorium and taught by a Vanderbilt man who I don't think received tenure at SMU. But a lot of coeds had a crush on the teacher and he was well known.

One term there were three football players in the class who always sat together: Meredith, Dave Shearer, and Sammy Shelton. Some will remember Shearer who was a JCT and NCAA leading punter. Shelton was another scholarship QB but IIRC his contribution was mostly on the practice field only.

The class included a segment on Shakespeare and part of the instruction included students reading parts from Hamlet. If you wanted to read a part you wrote your name on a piece of paper and left it on the lecturn at the end of class. The football players were always greatly and loudly amused when their classmates read the speeches of Laertes or Ophelia.

One coed got tired of the impolite athletes and decided it was payback time. She left Dave Shearer's name on the lecturn at the end of class one day so that he would be called on to read a part during the next class.
Shearer had some difficulty with reading a part out loud. No one thought it funnier than his two team mates.

I wonder if anyone on this board was a student in that class?

This thread is a better tribute to Dandy Don Meredith than that abortion of a 'ceremony' that was held for him tonight.

Sweet Christmas! Did an SMU undergrad broadcast major do the voiceover on that video tribute? If so, I hope the prof gives him a low grade. It was pathetic.

And for Dandy Don to be in a suite instead of on the field. Why?

Not impressive at all, in my opinion. Very anti-climactic.
