The main reason no one else has been hit with the DP is that the penalty is the equivelent of "cruel and unusual punishment". The results of the DP are devestating and as you can see, for the last 20 years people who had nothing to do with the things that brought on the penalty are still suffering the affects of the DP. True that SMU is responsible for dragging the recovery out as long as it has been, but even under good circumstances it probably would have taken ten years of innocent people dealing with the results of the penalty.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Why does drunkard Hansen need to bring up SMU cheating within almost every story he does on SMU? Most of the players that are at SMU now were not even born when SMU was cheating. Good grief Dale give it a break after more than two decades! C-ya @ Milos!
Dale brings is up, just like the ex-jock likes to remember the "glory days". Now he's an old bitter drunk with no ambition to find the next great story and no ability to deal with it if it landed in his lap. Sort of like the old single guy who's recently divorced. No ambition to go there again, and no ability to deal with it if he caught up with one.
The thing I think most SMU fans do not understand about the death penalty is that we did not get it for what we did, we got it for what we did not do. There were about 40 division one schools who were doing the same thing we were doing, and there were about 20 schools who were doing worse than what we were doing. And there are probably 20 schools today who are doing worse things than we ever did. SMU did not get the DP for the NCAA violations they committed....they got it for giving the middle finger to the NCAA. During the early 80s, the NCAA was always busting SMU, but they continued to break the rules.
Imagine you have been busted 3 times in 6 years and you are still sending money to players in envelopes with SMU letterhead. That is why the NCAA shut the program down. SMU thought they could ignore the NCAA and that is why they got the DP. The modern day example of what SMU did would be if OU did not kick Rhett Bomar off the team, started him, finished in the top 2, and still let him get paid.
actually....my example above is incorrect....the modern day example would be if there were e-mails from the AD at OU, which Bob Stoops was cc'd on, sent to Rhet Bomar about a wire transfer of funds into his personal account and the subject of the e-mail was "Payment for Playing Football"
SMU left the NCAA with no choice but to give them the DP. The NCAA did not want to do it, but SMU's arrogance, incompetence, ignorance, left them with no choice. The NCAA literally said to SMU....hey, we don't want to do this...but if you keep blowing us off...we will...and that conversation happened about 3 times. The reason the DP has not been given out to another school is not because it was so harsh, it is because no school has ever been so foolish in handling the NCAA as SMU was
And you left out that the OK governer was also cc'd, who was on the OU board of trustees, and just shrugged to the media when was confronted with the email and said that's the deal we made with Rhett we have to keep it. I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.
see if we had been smart we should have argued that the NCAA Death Penalty was unconstitutional as a bill of attainder since it technically was instituted AFTER some of the "player contracts" and that the NCAA had no power to cancel contracts which had already been made. A contract is a contract and we had a payroll to meet. Only a socialist would disagree.

Stallion that's great but as we know, University Presidents sit on the infractions committee and they are all socialists or communists at heart anyway, so they probably would have doubled the penalties for thinking like free market economists.
