I believe that we are two years out from a respectable CUSA defense. The offense will carry this team, and the D will be statistically improved from last year if the front 7 can generate a pass rush.
FYI, "Respectable," for a Conference USA defense, means about 400 yards and 31 points per game.
I am aware. In 2008, We gave up an average of 479 yards per game. Here are the rest of the teams in the conference.
1.East Carolina: 333.0
2.UCF: 334.3
3.Memphis: 353.8
4.Southern Mississippi: 365.0
5.Tulsa: 379.1
6.Tulane: 391.3
7.Houston: 413.5
8.Marshall: 418.1
9.UAB: 429.9
10.Rice: 452.2
11.UTEP: 469.8
As i said, offense will carry this team. A few more turnovers will get the offense back on the field to get back to scoring and take away an opportunity for opponents. We will still bleed yards, but will be improved. Rice won the WEst with the 10th best defense last year. Houston had the best d in 2007 and fell to the middle of the pack in 2008. UCF and USMISS have had the most consistently effective defenses, by and large, all CUSA teams improving each year on D. Yards only tell one part of the story. An extra stop or turnover per game puts in the drivers seat to win games with our offense. Broken record........i digress
