Didn't Texas Tech lose a horse when it freaked out, bolted, and ran into a wall? Watch this horse get spooked by Peruna, run into BLM knocking him out of the game, and smash into a wall by the grassy knoll, traumatizing 1000 children and getting the disaster played on every news and sports show in the country.
yep, they lost a double-T during a game vs New Mexico...1998 or so? maybe 97?

It was 1994, if memory serves me correctly. Crashed right into the wall.

This is a VERY troubling idea. For once (maybe twice) I am with Stallion on this one. Horrible, HORRIBLE idea to bring this animal in with Peruna! Traditions DO have value!! I too will be hard pressed to not boo when that horse leads the tema onto the field.
Long live Inez Perez!

I would like them to come out behind a real mustang as well. Maybe he should select a "Mustang" from the team each week that gets to lead the team out of the tunnel. That would be the player that has exceeded others in the previous weeks game/practices/academics. Make it a competition. I like the tradition of Peruna and hope it stays whatever happens with a new horse. Hey, let's make it a parade! Start with Peruna, then the new Pickens horse, followed by the P51 Mustang flyover, then an notable alumn rides out in a Ford Mustang convertible, then the Mustang of the week, then...

Now that I know that i can proudly display them! Two Hoofs

We have the only mascot that the general public can't just look at and see it is cool, but they have to google and find out that is it cool.

Who's mascot is 'cool' in and of itself? A generic horse? A big doped up longhorn just standing there? I stupid dog barking at everything? None of them are impressive, it is the history and tradition behind them that gives them value.
The only live mascots impressive on their own are dangerous and banned a long time ago.

Put Traveler next to Peruna and it is obvious. Most outside of SMU view our msacot as comical at best.

There are a number of foundations, including Mrs. Pickens organization, whose missions are to save and protect the wild horse (Mustang) population both in Texas and throughout the West. A worthy cause I support. This Mustang horse donation, I predict, will benefit SMU and its athletic program as well as give needed publicity to all wild horse rescue groups. Surely there is a place for both Peruna and a real Mustang in the ongoing tradition of SMU. By the way, for those of you bashing us who support this Mustang donation, I have no connection to the athletic program other than as a very long time supporter and Mustang Club member who believes the time for a real Mustang in our tradition is very overdue.

Hoop Fan wrote:the players are stoked? Players don't care about crap like this, they roll with the traditions of the school and the game presentation, whatever it is. I'm sure they are all sittin around in their dorm rooms talking about the gelding. You know what this really is right? Somehow Coach Jones got behind this and because of that the players have to act like they give a s***. So ridiculous. I've never booed at an SMU game and would hardly think of it, but I am gonna be hard pressed not to boo when this presentation starts. Is Gary Cogill the master of ceremonies too? It would be appropriate cuz this feels like a surreal, bad movie.
I would eagerly boo this thing. It's a creation of Oklahoma State, why not boo Okie State alum writes us a check, so we let his wife dictate who our mascot is. Man that is awesome. Unbelievable. What other university would allow that. As I have stated before: Peruna was here long before we sucked. Peruna was here when Doak Walker's mom was still wiping his [deleted]. Neither Doak, Kyle Rote, Dandy Don, Jerry Levias, Dickerson, James, or anybody else has ever had a problem being called a "pony," felt emasculated, or wished for a larger animal to make him feel better about himself. They took care of that on the field. It is not Peruna's fault that our football team has sucked. It is SMU's fault that our football team has sucked. One of the main components that makes college football unique is something called "tradition." Look it up I do not give a fat fiddler's [deleted] about what our players think about our mascot that has endured for 70 years. If they are at all concerned about the mascot, we are hosed anyway.

what is it with all these guys with 18 posts who have all of a sudden become experts in SMU tradition. Something strange is going on.
