It may sound trivial but psychologically mascots, uniforms, music, fan noise etc. does affect play on the field. It doesn't trump pure talent but it does affect all involved.
If you watched that video, JJ said "My players want to come out behind a real Mustang". I've also heard from former players who thought Peruna was ridiculous.
All that tells me is that the players need to be taught about Peruna's exploits.

I truly believe there are a whole bunch of posters on the Peruna Hit Squad who have no real affiliation with the university

Stallion, I'm an SMU Grad. Therefore you're wrong with regards to my stance against Peruna.
Also, there aren't many people in this world who would stick around for all the losing and heartache we as SMU fans receive without a high level of affiliation.

It cannot be said enough! Bringing in those extra horse(s) is insane and shows a total disregard for the history and tradition of SMU. But in today's environment, traditions have been thrown by the wayside so often. History? What history?
Sad, sad, sad.
Long live Inez Perez!

Let's see National championship, bowl wins, a car named after our team, the Pony Express, SWC championships, all led onto the field by a little shetland pony. I would say that Peruna and his feistyness did more to help us to wins. I remember in the early 70's when we were beating the stuffing out of Wake Forest, and our tradition was to have Peruna run after each touchdown that we were getting seriously worried about Peruna's health. Later I was talking to one of his handlers and he told me that some of the players wanted to score enough points to tire the little guy out. Peruna was certainly tired by the end of the game, but still kicking. That said, if these horses are only for the Equestrian program and they are being presented to the school at a football game, I'm actually cool with that.

So that makes it right that we should change the horse because we've been losing. Do you think if LSU had been tanking for 20 consecutive years, they would have replaced Mike with a white Tiger?

I know some have different positions on this issue. But the horses we are getting were rescued out of some terrible situations. They did not choose to come here. No reason to take it out on them.

It is obvious to me that from the Board of Trustees, most of whom have no affiliation to SMU other than being on the board, down to the President, to the AD, to the football coach have no respect for the long standing traditions of this university. All are hired guns that will leave us flapping in the wind at some point without a second thought.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

So the ideal situation for them is to have a connection with SMU? Where are they going to be moved to.

just because we are adding another horse does not mean we are getting rid of Peruna...also, traditions take time to develop, when peruna first made an appearance I am sure there were a lot of people saying oh this isn't tradition, i think it is important to add more traditions to SMU football. we have very few at this point, but have added some since i was around like mustang 11 and the boulevard, but some have also died like no more senior gifts, I think it is important to look at this whole situation as if it will be a good tradition for years to come, ie good pr for continually saving "wild mustangs" or if it isn't then don't create it. i know the athletic department has been trying to come up with things to add to add more of a home crowd spirit from things are rivals do to things that other colleges do
