Conference USA office told me that after the Liberty Bowl there is NO particular pecking order. None.

Call 'em and ask to speak to their "bowl expert."

It seems to me if SMU doesn't make the Liberty Bowl, the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl on New Year's Eve in Fort Worth against a MWC opponent, would be better for:
1) the school
2) the SMU fan
3) local exposure

The Hawaii Bowl is better for:
1) June Jones
2) the players and coaches
3) the Circle of Champions (Merry Christmas!)

Here is another scenario leaving SMU out:

Houston 10-2 6-2 3-2
East Carolina 8-4 6-2 5-0
UCF 7-5 5-3 3-2
Southern Miss 7-5 5-3 3-2
UTEP 7-5 6-2 5-0
Tulsa 7-5 5-3 3-2
Marshall 6-6 4-4 2-3
SMU 6-6 5-3 3-2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UAB 4-8 3-5 1-4
Memphis 3-9 2-6 1-4
Tulane 3-9 1-7 1-4
Rice 0-12 0-8 0

According to the website that myself and another poster saw Hawaii bowl did have 2nd choice. We will see I guess since you say you called. The Hawai bowl will extend the offer if we don't win the conference championship. Hawaii bowl would not be bad for recruit as it gets more national exposure.

Do we have any chance at all to play the Aggies somewhere in Texas for a bowl game over the holidays? Now that would be fun to see. Nevada in the Sheraton Bowl doesnt do much for me, but granted beggers cant be choosers.

Yeah, I saw that somewhere too. That's why I called C-USA.
Perhaps the conference was just giving me a diplomatic answer, not wishing to p--- off any of the bowls.

the press release technically said "preferred selection as mutually agreed upon" with CUSA not second pick but I believe that to be essentially true from what I've seen-Hawaii Bowl should have second choice but doesn't necessarily pick the second place team-they pick the team they prefer to fill seats. .

This opening created an opportunity for Conference USA to send their conference championship game runner-up or a preferred selection team, as mutually agreed upon by C-USA and ERT, to participate in Hawaii.

Conference USA will send a preferred selection team as mutually agreed upon by both C-USA and ERT to participate in Hawai‘i. The University of Hawai‘i will represent the WAC if the Warriors are bowl eligible.

Amen to that, brother. There wil be no post from me on the subject of bowls until we are eligible - unless of course to say I will be going IF we get invited to one.

This is SMU football - and although I think we are turning a corner I am still operating in a no expectation zone. I like our odds - but there is much work to be done and talking about this is all just premature e-bowlulation.

Wouldn't it be better to go to a bowl game that's closer to home so that more of the SMU faithful who have put up with the losing seasons for the last 20 years could attend the game? Given that most teams going to the 'lesser" bowl games lose money for the bowl trip, could the penny pinching athletic department really afford to even send the team and the host of other people it deemed "worthy" of the free trip to the game?

Were you one of the marketing people who got fired? Geez, our athletic department may be a lot of things, but "penny pinching" is not one of them, especially considering they had a chartered flight for the team for a game that was 4 and a half hours away by bus.

I think this is right. When they say there is no pecking order, I think they are only saying that the selections don't necessarily go to the teams with the best records, not that it is a free for all as far as selection order.

Every bowl does this to some extent, but some conferences have some weird bylaws about it. Pretty sure the ACC has some rule along the lines of that a bowl can only choose a team with one more loss than the team with the best record that is still available. So I bet the CUSA office just means there are no such rules for CUSA bowls to follow (beyond the NCAA regulation about taking all the 7 win teams.)
