I've stayed at the Sheraton Waikiki(Link No. 41 on Link at Bottom), Royal Hawaiian(Link No. 42) and Hilton Hawaiian Village(Link No. 12). The first two are most centrally located-they are what you think of when you see Waikiki Beach.

I'd lean to the Sheraton Waikiki because of central location but apparently Sheraton Waikiki is undergoing some renovations-which is good for lower rates but you have to deal with Construction. I know the Sheraton Waikiki has completed renovations of many rooms and a new adult only pool that looks pretty cool. I would think that might be headquarters for Bowl events. Actually went to the Sheraton Waikiki with former SMU Football player Richard Neely when we were fraternity brothers thanks to our dads who were both prominently involved in American Bar Association-free mai tai parties every afternoon for 7 days with rich lawyer daughters while our Dads went to meetings.

Royal Hawaiian is the traditional Pink Lady of Waikiki -you all have seen pictures of the Royal Hawaiin and Sheraton Moana (Link No. 50) in movies and TV shows whether you realize it or not-think traditional, museum and antique. The Moana which I've been through is very much like the Royal Hawaiian-a traditional Waikiki institution and both have been around for 100+ years.

The Hilton Hawaiian is a few miles away down the beach with a great view of Diamond Head and an excellent beach that is actually much bigger than Waikiki Beach which is very thin but still a blast. The Sheraton Waikiki and Hilton Hawaiian Village are both resort complex types where you basically don't have to leave the premises.

All are rated 4 stars. But you can save some real bucks by staying away from the 8 or so hotels actually fronting Waikiki Beach. Many such as the Hyatt Regency(Link No. 64) and that chic boutique Hotel Waikiki Parc (Link 28) mentioned above can be accessed simply by crossing the street. The Hyatt Regency is a double spiral tall highrise with plenty of great views of Diamond Head. There are probably 30 hotel with views of Diamondhead within 2-3 blocks of Waikiki Beach.

The Halekelana(sp) (Link 26) is for the Circle of Champions.

Maybe some of our Hawaii friends can give an update.

Biggest Tip-at least one day of your trip rent a car and drive toward Diamond Head and then around the island until you get to the North Shore where all the famous surfing spots are-like the Bonzai Pipeline. Hundreds of Incredible panaramic ocean/mountain views along the way. Don't go thousands of miles and miss this. Get away from Waikiki if you can-its nice but its not Hawaii-think a beautiful panoramic beach surrounded by both Downtown Dallas and North Mark Mall. Then drive back through the pineapple fields and ranch/farm land through the center of the Island.

Check out this Waikiki Hotel Map-its gives you a great summary of information and photos on a map so you can map location. Click on the number on the Map and then read the positives and negatives of each property-it seems to be pretty accurate and updated

Stallion is right about the North Shore. We've stayed there and it's MUCH more peaceful and "real". Try the glider flight along the North Shore - fantastic views of the island! SO..if you stay near downtown rent the car as he suggests and drive up alone the eastern shore to the North Shore. Go to the end of the road..it stops at the airfield where you can go flying in the glider (also where parts of the tv show "Lost" were filmed.

In my case, "past my wife" would become "my past wife" very quickly.

Do you think this kind of power comes easy? You have to marry them when their young and develop them, it’s a long journey.

That's ok. I owe her. She thought she was marrying for money and found out otherwise after the fact.

I thought I'd throw out another Hotel option some may not be aware. The Trump Waikiki opened up this weekend. First brand new hotel in Waikiki for some time. Its probably going add $1,000 to a 5 day trip over the 4 stars previously mentioned but its an interesting option. I'm tempted but probably have better use for that price.

The Hotel to stay on the North shore is the Turtle Bay Hilton Resort and has a great dining room overlooking the Banzai Pipeline and all the surfers, great at sunset! The Moana and the great pink hote,l Royal Hawaiin are very historic and fun and have stayed at both in years past...great scenery (wives won't be as much a fan). Hanoama (sp) Bay around the other side of Hilton Head is a great stop for snorkling and swimming if you have a car. If you like to play Basketball the fire station off Wakiki has games almost very night outside on their courts and usually has some good players to challenge your skills. The cheaper Hotels off the Wakikii beach are fine, as how much time do we spend in the room anyway and if you want to watch the sunset and view Diamond Head just grab drinks and/or dinner at the main Hotels on the beach anyway. You CAN sleep on the red eye back as i did it many times when I was married to a flight attendent back in the day. The previuos days Mai Tai's will fuel your sleep.

So I am assuming that some time after the Tulane win if will become official? I would hate to be watching the Fort Worth bowl via Hawaii.

I need to know when to pull the trigger. From what I remember about the UCF Hawaii invite, they had bowl officials in the stands and offered moments after the game.

Think I will wear my slippers to lunch today.

What time do Rice and Houston play? They might have to wait for that one to end since technically the Liberty Bowl has first choice, and selects the Champion. If Rice were to win we would be delayed until after the Championship game unless a swap out were arranged.

It averages out. I thought I was marrying her for sex.
