Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984This is a great thread Carolinastang and enjoy reading all the posts....wierd as I don't remember where or anything about that 1984 game...(the mid 80's must have done a number on me) but I do remember the darn Holiday Bowl a few years earlier though...watching at a sports bar in Addision and wondering what the heck are the Stangs doing?..'.knock that last pass from Jim McMann down, don't try to catch it....oh no....Blaine Smith I think, was the one that had the real chance to just knock it down....
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984I wasn't born till 89, but both of my parents were watching the game as my mom went to smu. my dad, a UT grad, never really became a fan of SMU until June Jones was hired. For the longest time he would just put up with SMU because of my mom
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984Your mother is a saint if she married a UT grad and has put up with him all these years.
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984Why did your church have a Christmas Eve servcie on 12/29?...unless the dates in original thread are wrong?
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984I was 4 years old and had no idea SMU existed.
What an amazing year this has been. Can't wait to go to Hawaii in a few weeks!
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984Hey mustang1108 didn't your mom promise you she would take you to a bowl game when SMU finally went to one. I would make her live up to that promise and get her to take me also.
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984I'm still working on it, hopefully she can make it happen. I don't the she ever expected SMU's first bowl after the DP to be back in Hawaii, I know once SMU joined the C-USA she always hoped we would go to the New Orleans Bowl so she could have an excuse to go to Bourbon Street.
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984You guys think you are old. I was 41 years old. It has been very hard this past 25 years listening to my friends from the other SWC shools talk football. But SMU football in the early 80's was exciting. To go to Texas Stadium and watch the Pony Express was the best. The other teams would have 4 times as many fans. I tell my friends the best pro football game I have seen was SMU vs the Aggies in Texas Stadium. I hope JJ stays with us and we can get back to Top 25.
Number 17 in your program....Number 1 in your heart Old Pony
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984I remember where I was but I do not remember her name.

Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984
Nice first post...and I agree. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984Great memories from everyone! Certainly better than the year before vs. Alabama, but not quite as good as beating Pittsurgh on January 1, 1983! Quick Holiday Bowl memory: I was down near the field and ran into Russ Potts and shook hands with him on his way down from the press box when we were up by almost 3 touchdowns! Oh the humanity that ensued.
Point of clarification: The Sun Bowl the year before vs. Alabama was on Christmas Eve. That was asked earlier. The Aloha Bowl was truly on the 29th of December in 84. Pony Up! "Your announcer is Bill Melton."
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984Is this Mr. Meredith?
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984It sounds like Mr. Meredith, but wouldn't he have been a little older that 41 in 84 considering he played for the Ponies in the late 50's. This past week was the 50th anniversary of him signing with the Cowboys
Re: Where were you on December 29, 1984My assumption was that he was refering to Sanders.
