Totally agree. I would think there is a JC back that could at least give us one good year, maybe with Butler. I think Fields is going to be great but there is a big difference in Madill, OK and playing our schedule. Same with Pope from Mount Enterprise, TX

We will be okay at RB the sky is not falling. We were not going to run as much n3xt year anyway because Padron is gaining more experienced in the system. We did not run much in the Hawaii bowl if you noticed. We have 3 good experienced backs that can block until Fields learns the system.

Fields will play. He will start with a limited playbook, alternating with other backs, and grow from there.
Go Ponies!! Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad

Well my last comment is this... While Shawnbrey did have a very good season, look at it a little closer. Take the emotion out and put yourself in a draft room on April 24th:
1) He was a RB in a 1 back Run and Shoot Offense
2) He caught a TON of screen passes and dump off passes from Mitchell and Padron
3) He's not much of a blocker in the backfield
4) He didn't carry the ball in on the goal line on a regular basis.
5) He has only one year of college football active duty.
6) He did not play on special teams.
Now... think about those 6 facts for a second and think about an NFL coaching staff who needs a RB to play immediately. Would you draft this player over a 2,3 or 4 year starter that played at a school that ran first and passed second?
I'm just being honest here guys... If you were an NFL scouting director, what would you do?? I don't want to compare names because that's not the point. Just think about it.

Its all about the combine...If he runs a 4.3, jumps high, he will get drafted, otherwise he will be in the cfl

I personally think he won't be drafted. I hope I'm wrong. BUT, a few of your points are actually positives: 2) That's becoming a big part of the NFL game. A back that can catch is very valuable (Westbrook and Steve Slaton come to mind) 5) Less wear and tear. Especially valuable for smaller backs. 6) May be a good thing depending on how much success, or lack thereof he would have had at SMU. With no film, maybe a scout thinks SP would be good for SM. The combine will make or break Shawnbrey. Every coach and scout out there is looking for the next Chris Johnson. CJ manhandled the league and I think we are seeing a pendulum swing toward smaller, speedier, elusive runners who can catch. This may be the thing that gets SM drafted.

I don't think he's going to the combine. He wasn't invited, was he?

Any chance Padron can play QB and RB at the same time?

YEah I was freaking about this McNeal thing (I only heard yesterday). Then i remembered that a good RB in a JJ system is an anomaly. I think we'll be just fine.

I don't know if underclassmen are invited to the combine or not, but this list shows the declared RB McNeal will be competing against. Add in all the SR RB and he's one in a huge group: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co ... s-tracker/

Shawnbrey did play special teams...he alternated returning kicks with McCann and Butler. I know a couple of friends on the team said they were disappointed Butler didn't get the ball much this year because he's waited so patiently to play and his talent was worthy of playing time. But McNeal came in this year and its highly unlikely Coach Jones convinced him to come to SMU from Miami to split carries. Plus, let's not assume that Coach Jones is gonna run the offense the same way next year as previously mentioned...perhaps the Hawaii Bowl was an indication of things to come in the future. And with 3 of 4 receivers returning, and 1 with starting experience, I have no problems with offense airing it out next year....in fact, I personally look forward to us airing it out more and hope Padron has 4,000+ yards passing next season, and we don't have a reason to run the ball outside of killing the clock!

There are a lot of 2 back offenses in the league that need change of pace runners. Also, as someone pointed out he could go to the CFL. IF Shawnbrey would have come back he would not have gotten 1000 yeards again. The reason he got so many carries this year is because we had QB issues and next year we won't. He saw the writing on the wall. Again, just look at the Hawaii Bowl game.
