I started watching SMU football in 47-48 and remember seeing games in Ownby Stadium and later in the Cotton Bowl. I attended SMU in the fifties and saw all home games and many road games and in the sixties, seventies and eighties, after military service, saw all home games and many road games. I have seen a lot of games since the DP and was there for the first game in Ford Stadium even though I no longer reside in Texas. I have always thought that Peruna was not very inspirational and a little silly especially when in a venue such as Columbus, Ohio, where I have seen a couple of games. Always wondered if the home crowd thought that tiny, scrawny pony was what our football team was like.

Recently went to the Fiesta Bowl and the Boise State mascot was a full sized horse ridden by a statuesque, good looking blonde carrying a guidon. Seemed pretty inspirational to me. I enjoyed seeing the authentic mustangs at the Hawaii Bowl on TV. I have also been on horses a lot, all the way from working cattle as a kid to elk hunting and a gelding is always my choice, rather than a mare or obviously a stallion.

To me, considering the job that Orsini has done getting JJ hired and the subsequent seemingly good work done by JJ in turning our program around, the carping about the real mustangs versus the pony seems a little shallow and infantile. It is really a side issue and detracts a little from what appears to be a new and very positive beginning.

Having said all that, my opinion is just that, an opinion. Maybe, in this case, there is no right answer and everyone's opinion has some credibility. I just hate to see the negativity about the issue detracting from all the optimism. It seems like it is a new day for SMU football and I applaud what is happening. I was beginning to be concerned about being around for the turnaround.

PS, I just wish that Raleigh Blakely had lived long enough to see the Hawaii Bowl.

I wonder if in June's first few years at Hawaii there was a Rainbows vs. Warriors debate. If so, how many wins and bowl games did it take to silence the "we've always been Rainbows" faction?
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Yeah Dutch I think Garrett said there was. Hell there's always gonna be KillJoys where-ever you are. As I predicted June Jones pretty much stuck a sock down the pie-holes of many of the doom & gloomers....of course now that they can't whine about the football team they have found something else to cry about and try to inject the negativity into as many threads as possible.

Go MUSTANGS!

good to see the SMU Chearleadering and Booster Club Squad take their usual principled strong stance in favor of SMU tradition for good ole trust fund babies Cowpoke and Maybell. The only thing June Jones had to change around here was the recent tradition of trying to play Division 1A football under Ivy League Guidelines. He did and he won with those players playing essential roles. Did you ever see one of these Yell-Leaders ever take a stand on Ponyfans on one of those issues; No because they were too busy bending over grabbing their ankles and spouting the SMU Cheerleading and Booster Club Motto-suck up to get a good seat at the Mustang Club Rally and you might get elected Seargent of Arms one day.

well Stallion whether they took a stand or not, JJ's here, the 'model' changed and we went to a bowl game. Is it your position that SMU should do away with the Mustang Club? What is your position anyway? Forever didnt you say once they changed the model, you'd be a Mustang Clubber yourself? And didnt you say that you "...made a sizeable donation [twss] to the Mustang Club"?

Thanks in advance for mere answers to the questions above, vitriol-free. Just curious.

I've been a Mustang Club member since the day it became obvious that the Model had changed based on the players who were recruited and admitted to the university.

We all are Mustang Club members when you buy season football tickets. A portion of each goes to support the MC. It's just a matter of how active you want to be with it or if you choose a low profile.

I'm proud of my membership and am fortunate to be able to donate beyond what comes out of my season tickets. But I wouldn't call myself an active participate.

BTW, I'm still ticked about the fraudulent horse issue. As far as I'm concerned, they will be ignored.

George that was a short term deal, to get more people aware of the Mustang Club, and for fans to understand that if you really want to see SMU rise to a higher level, we need the funds to do so. Most of the money goes towards the recruiting budget, and we ALL know how important that is! I don't have any desire to become "segeant of arms", but, I am captain of one of the fundrive teams, and you can pm me, and I will be happy to get you hooked up! Pony Up!
