Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementThe pony on the helmets is the correct pony. It has always been the correct pony.
The bulkier Phony Pony has never been on an SMU helmet. The so-called "Prancing Pony" has, but not the Phony Pony. Somewhere along the way this "Phony Pony" crept into our logos. It has more of a curl in the tail like the Ford Mustang logo, as noted above, but also larger hindquarters and a slightly different neck and head. The people who produce collegiate products often rely on a "source book" (for lack of a better term). But even these source books and guides are often incorrect when it comes to the SMU logo. I believe the Phony Pony was someone's attempt to copy the logo without exactly duplicating the SMU version. Why? Who knows? It's such a close copy that most people don't notice the difference. But when placed side-by-side, the official SMU running pony is much more streamlined and attractive. SMU is becoming more diligent about policing the logo, but the Phony Pony has been around so long it's going to be a chore to eradicate it from all official school materials. http://smu.edu/brand/logos/peruna.asp
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing Agreement
Gameday Cloth: You may be selling officially licensed apparel, but like I said, many of the logo source guides manufacturers use are wrong because SMU has only recently begun to police its official logo. Several of your items have the "Phony Pony" but it sounds like you are the type of dedicated retailer (and fan) who will be more diligent in the future. Personally, I don't buy anything anymore with the Phony Pony - now that I know the difference. ![]()
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementBottom Line Phony Pony with his curly tail looks a tad effeminate. (I bet you thought I was going to say gay-but I didn't-not that there would have been anything wrong with that)

We'd better change our Helmets as they are evidently not correct... ![]() "Logo should not face the left" ![]() SMU - IT'S YOUR TURN

Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementActually, there is more wrong with that Mustang than just the direction it is facing. Surely they can do a better job than that with the helmet appliques. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementIncluding the fact that it looks like a miniature replica helmet.
Good call, HB PonyFan — the Mustang on the left side of the helmet should be running toward the back of the helmet?
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing Agreement
Always up for SMU gear that can't be found elsewhere. Next time I'm over there, I'm stopping in.

Her stock is somewhat limited because she just opened, but she is a super-sweet, young business woman that is a huge Mustang fan. She said she will be adding more items soon. "THE SMU BLVD - - NO PLACE ELSE" (retired)
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing Agreement
I appreciate any retailer, such as yourself, who promotes SMU merchandise in this area. Please realize that one of my hot buttons is the incorrect pony. I can assure you that I will NEVER purchase any "CLC licensed" Phony Pony merchandise. As poster "Longtime" has shown, the Phony Pony is out there, it is CLC licensed, but it is NOT CORRECT. I'm happy to offer my services to quickly view any Pony you choose to put on any merchandise in the future. Good luck with your venture. I doubt I will make it to your store as I am a solid "214" guy who rarely ventures north of 635 unless there are drinks, females or softball involved. ![]() In case you missed his post: ![]() Link to SMU Brand Guidelines: http://smu.edu/brand/logos/peruna.asp ![]()
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementThe "Mustang should always run to the right" rule is obviously meant for most printed materials where a Mustang facing right would not look awkward. There are obvious exceptions, such as a helmet or basketball shorts. You wouldn't want the Mustang running the opposite direction as our players are running down the field or court, obviously. Could it be any more obvious that there are common sense exceptions to this standard?
Of course, you can now buy adidas SMU shorts with the Mustang on the side of the left leg, running to the right. It's an odd look to the see the Mustang running the opposite direction than if you were wearing the shorts and moving forward. I suppose this is because the manufacturer insists upon having its logo on the right leg, but it's a sign that SMU is getting better about enforcing its logo that the Mustang is facing right. It doesn't look as awkward when the Mustang logo is on the front of the leg, but on the side it looks a little off. By the way, the Ford Mustang logo always faces left.
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing Agreement
The pony is only facing left on this picture because it is displaying the left side of the helmet. All of our helmets have always been like this on the left side. On the right side of the helmet the pony is running right. It would look awkward if it was running right on the left side of the helmet. This is a picture of a 1980's helmet. I have seen this helmet for sale online on a NCAA Replica and game used helmet site.
Re: SMU Signs New Merchandise Marketing AgreementOK, so about the new on-line store ... why is it that we have one of the best men's soccer teams in the country, but you can't buy a t-shirt? On the "official" on-line store, you can get shirts supporting swimming and diving, tennis, basketball, football and rowing (rowing? really?), but nothing for soccer, which not only is having a great season, but has been one of the two (along with swimming and diving) best programs on campus for decades.
The soccer team deserves some support from the school, doesn't it? You'd think SMU would make some effort to brag about its best team ... if the higher-ups cared about non-football sports, of course. "Mass genocide is the most exhausting activity one can engage in .... next to soccer."
