Especially with the speed of some of our receivers and if our OL is clicking. A few quick TDs and they may back of the blitzing real quick.

It will be interesting to see if/when that happens. With it being the first game, I wouldn't think they would back off, especially since that could be used as a learning experience for our young guys.

Padron will need to be able to recognize what kind of defense Tech will be in, where a blitz might be coming from, who might be dropping into coverage, how many people our defense will be sending, etc. all in a fairly hostile environment. We won't be in one defense, it will be mutiple. It will be man, zone, 4-3,3-4,5-2,nickel, dime, zoneblitz, 3-3-5, etc.

Just remember, Tubs is on par (defensive-wise) to a Saban, Stoops, or Pelini. My only question is, does Tech have the type of talent, and understanding, to be able to run it effectively?

If not, it could be a very good day for Padron, and if we do, Padron will wish he was somewhere else!

No, because I live in Chicago, but if I was at the game, then I would buy the beers for you! :D

Mestengo, maybe you should watch the game in Chi Town - might be cheaper for you.

At the risk of sucking up to the enemy, I'd like to point out that FinallyADefense might well be the classiest and most forthright opposing fan in the history of PonyFans.com.

Agreed, Finally A Defense is very forthcoming in his opinions and has very candid responses. FAD, whats your opinion of TTU really taking SMOO seriously ? I know they want to make an impression for Tubbs and being a national televised game and all, but is TTU looking at the game as a working out some kinks game before the TU game two weeks later ?

All Tomorrow's Parties: Texas Tech, where brigands are (mostly) friendly
By Holly Anderson

Dust off your gun belts and bust out your pirate flags: Our weekly tailgating guide returns to Texas, this time stopping in Lubbock for Texas Tech's date with Oklahoma.

The Lowdown.

The thing that makes Lubbock special is that you have to really, really want to get there. It's nowhere near a major city; most Red Raider alums of our acquaintance make the five-hour drive from Dallas every game day, which has the effect of making the crowd that much more emotionally invested in the game.

Couple that with the relatively small size of Jones Stadium (around 59,000 capacity) and you get more of a personal feel to the victory vibes. It's a lot like a high school environment, and we mean that in the best way. Everyone you'll meet is fired up like it's their own kid playing out there. This feeling will only be magnified if you can manage to score a school ID and watch the game from the best seats in the house, the Double T on the grass. And make sure to snap a picture of the decrepit Double T scoreboard, as well, a source of ironic pride for many fans.

We assure all doubters, West Texas hospitality is not a myth. Lubbock has an exaggerated reputation for being unfriendly to visitors, but as with any school worth its tailgating cred, you've just got to behave and they'll open right up. Engage politely with a local and you'll find yourself stuffed to the gills with delicious barbecue before you know it. Added bonus: Lubbock's once-stringent blue laws have been relaxed, making beer available for purchase within the city limits.

What To Wear.

Parking will be harder to come by than in recent years thanks to new stadium construction, and it's a big campus, so be prepared to do some walking. T-shirts, jeans and boots are de rigeur, although girls are dressing up more than they used to. But whatever you throw on, pack some layers. Lubbock gets cold fast when the sun goes down, and high winds frequently kick up some dust, so bring sunglasses. And if you really want to blend in, doll up in your finest brigand wear and join the merry crew of Mike Leach's Pirate Academy.

Pregame Stops.
• Chimy's, 2417 Broadway. Homestyle Mexican food and killer margaritas.
• One Guy From Italy, 1101 University Avenue. Pizza joint heavily favored by students despite the terrifying jingle on the website.
• Spanky's, 811 University Avenue. Our Red Raider brethren swear, "Nothing settles an upset stomach better than fried cheese logs."

Postgame Stops.
• Lone Star Oyster Bar, 3040 34th Street and 5116 58th Street. Absolute dive that's not to be missed; try the Hot Shrimp.
• Blue Light Live, 1806 Buddy Holly Avenue. Live music and wiggling coeds.
• Cricket's, 2412 Broadway. Right across from campus with a nice beer selection.

What To Drink.
Our Texas Tech correspondent responds, in all caps, "KEYSTONE." Any manner of light beer will do, really, but if you're of a cocktail bent try a Raider Red, a sublime concoction of Big Red and vodka. Guns up!

I grew up in Dallas and I live in Dallas now, and I have to admit I miss that smell. Especially after it rains in the spring. That cloying odor just never leaves you. I need help.
One concern I have is that, historically, JJ's teams (or system) take a few games to really crank it into high gear.
That's my biggest concern. Leach's offenses also took several games to start clicking. Second biggest concern is stopping the run. If we have problems in either case, it could be a really long day. Their biggest problem will be going game speed while implementing new systems - if we can provide some pressure, they'll make mistakes.

The Tech poster has been right on in most of his analysis and about as humble as possible.

I went to both schools and talking to SMU fans there is HUGE amount of optimism for this season which is somewhat warranted. There were several wins and losses decided by a few plays last year which is impressive that SMU held on and made some of those plays which shows progress. However, as we all know that was not a full strength Nevada team and the ball bounced our way alot which created a big margin, great performance by Padron though.

I agree the main matchup will be Tech's O-Line and SMU's D-Line. If SMU is able to get pressure and disrupt the passing game which could happen and stop the run which is unlikely to happen then it will really frustrate Tech. Tech will easily run the ball 50% of the time due the quality at RB in this game and the depth of the SMU front 7. I think SMU starting D-line is formidable and will cause some problems but how long can they hold up?

For SMU to win they have to score first or get up by a couple TDs by half causing Tech to play fast. Tech can play fast and still win but in this game they would prefer to run the ball, kill the clock, and play good defense because of SMU's offense. Tech has the same offense but why get into a shootout when you can grind away and win by 21.

I highly doubt Tech is overlooking the game in fact I think its opposite. In years past absolutely overlooked it and rightly so. This year everyone knows SMU will have a competitive team and no one will overlook them. This is Tubs first game and that stadium will be rocking. Alot of very excited players and fans eager to kick off the new stadium and coach with a win, they will give it everything they got.

I think SMU will put up at least 2-3 TDs in this game unless the defense is even better than advertised then maybe about 17 points. SMU is going to get at least a few plays of 30 yards + due to the vertical routes and inexperienced secondary. I think SMU offense can be effective but it will have to run the ball, you have to keep the defense honest or Padron will end up getting hurt with guys teeing him up.

In order for the Ponies to win I am seeing probably two turnovers that lead to points. I think SMU will have to score 35 to win this game. If the front 7 play great and hold up the whole game then SMU has a chance. SMU O-line is the best it has had in a while but Tech has some very very good players on DL that will get to the QB if he holds it too long.

In the end it will be won in the trenches as most games are and on the road against a Big 12-2 team for the first game of the season that will know you are coming and give you everything they got is probably too much for SMU to handle this year. Not enough quality depth to hold up against those kinds of athletes in a hostile environment. SMU is gonna keep it close but by the second half Tech will have worn them down and found a few weakness to exploit. Will be a respectable and hard fought game with a score around 38-24 Tech.
