It's not like we are playing the cream of the crop in terms of defenses. Here is a recap:
Tech 98th ranked defense UAB 95 Wazzu 116 TCU 1 (the oddball on this list) Rice 108 Tulsa 81 Navy 29 Houston 82 Tulane 96 UTEP 50
With the exception of TCU, Rice and Navy, we have scored fewer points than each of those teams gives up on average every week, and by nearly a full 6 points. Our offense is simply bad, and the penalties make it worse.
Thank You for that post...Everyone needs to take their June Junes Colored Sunglasses off and realize how bad this is...This offense SUX...its soft, unimaginative, unflexible. It is OK to admit we are outdated...Yes, Like Navy, we can still have our moments, Hell, we still may win conference. But don't kid yourself this is good..the wave of the future....Any offense that makes the QB come over to the sideline each play, call a play, without even seeing the defense is outdated. Hell, June can keep his offense, do what you do, but at leat line up and look at the defense before you call a play, Maybe, JUST MAYBE, you will score more than 14 against UTEP.
Instead of blaming June and his offense, maybe we need to realize are receiving core is not the same as it was last season (No Sanders and No Wilkerson) and doesn't compare to the 2007 Hawaii Warriors receiving core (Bess, Grice-Mullen, Rivers, and Hawthorne)... We do have some very good young receivers (But they are YOUNG ex. DJ )... Padron is good, but he is not Timmy Chang or Colt Brennan just yet, and he may not develop into a QB like those I just listed (He is a true Sophomore)... And TCU is not just some irrelevant outlier... Our offense played very well against the #1 Def in the nation... So you really can't just throw that out like that because it is evidence that our offense can be very good and explosive...

OR we can just admit our offense is outdated and unimaginative? Maybe you are right and I am wrong...I have a problem though with the fans that give the free pass. Yes, maybe I am wrong, I can admit that....but our problem is the fan that cannot entertain the possibility that maybe June and his offense are over the hill. If I am wrong, I am wrong, I will admit it...but why do most posters here assume that June is God?

Look, I'm not saying June should go. I am also not discounting the TCU game, I'm just saying that is the one game where we actually played a lot better than the average their opponents put out, so I am giving us credit there. But what I am saying is that I would expect this offense to be better given how bad the average team defense we are playing, even after we have lost some players. The average defense we play is #75 in the nation, and that includes the #1 team in that average (and FYI, if you think our defense is God-awful, we are actually #71 in the nation, so better than the average we have played week-in, week-out). Something is desperately wrong here, and I am not sure anyone knows what it really is. That is, unless some of you guys that can make it to the Monday lunches have been told a secret that the rest of us don't know.

The answer is simple,
Any offense that does not line up, look at the defense, and THEN call a play, is outdated.
Plain and Simple, not open for debate.
June is being stubborn and hurting us.
Say what you want, but this is true, it ain't working, really didn't work last year, and certainly didnt work two years ago.
It can have its moments when you get lucky. But it is outdated, we could be so much better.

Wrong. It's a pretty innovative hybrid of the Spread/Air Raid with some WR reads thrown in. If anything, it's too "advanced" for the average QB/WR combo. shadowman wrote:we could be so much better
Right. Our WRs aren't getting open and they, along with Padron, aren't making the right reads. This year's recruits should help address that issue.

Our Inside receivers were horrible tonite. 13 receptions for about 80 yards. I swear Darius Johnson either goes out of bounce on his own or falls down before getting hit 3/4th of the time. Johnson is playing extremely soft right now. How about giving some other kids a shot inside. I ready to see Jeremy Johson. Tonite was unacceptable.

This thread is absolute garbage. We have major problems Jones has to fix, but it isn't getting passed by. His obsolete offense being run in Hawaii put up a ton of production this year.

I was thinking the run and shoot is an awful offense, but I'm thinking it's Padron. Not making the right reads/decisions and they kill drives. I'd like to see JJ get some reps. Did he not play in a similar offense at NM State? as for the original post, i won't agree, but I won't disagree. Something needs to change. The R&S needs to drop 40+ a night to win regardless of how good/bad our D is. June has 2 weeks to fix it.

I know we don't have much depth, but it might be time to start shaking things up. While I like KP and have been a supporter of his, I don't see anything wrong w/giving JJ some playing time to see what happens. I will go as far as applying that to any starter who is slacking or continually being penalized. Any player who has an ounce of competitive spirit in them will step up to the challenge and work harder. We have a week off to give it a try.

Funny thing is JJ is a really good coach....coaching what was a HORRID team a few years ago. Can't expect this guy to just win a championship with SMU right away. SMU still has SOOOO much work to be done. If you fire JJ you take 10 steps back.

My only critique on JJ year 1 is that he seemed to stubbornly stick to this formula rather than adapt his system to the players he had.
In year two, I think he did a remarkable job overturning my criticism with the switch to the 3-4 D and the inclusion of a significant running attack.
By and large, June has been terrific. We just need a few more playmakers and a lot of depth. Imagine where we'd be if we had LeReibus, Wilkerson, Pittman and a healthy Sterling Moore this year?

as I said in another thread, JJ is our last and only chance at becoming relevant again. No other option.
Our guys still need to show up and play, and do the work in the classroom. If our Mustangs are to bask in the glory of success, they also need to wallow in the shadows of not performing up to potential. Or even showing up.

This has to be the most inane post I have read in a long, long time.
If the outcome of this season is a second consecutive bowl trip - I would say - let JJ run whatever offense and defense he chooses.
Get over it. If you want to watch 1-11 teams go find out where Mike Caven or Phil Bennett is head coaching and buy some season tix.

The only people on earth with a shorter memory than the OP are the Texas fans calling for Mack Brown's head (although those guys amuse the heck out of me).
Seriously, do you remember what it was like? When we would have knocked over old ladies and children for a .500 season? Over half this team is still not recruits of the current regime. When the talent is up to snuff, the wins will begin to become old hat.
Until then, I wish we were doing better, but changing coaches now would end the forward progress.
Stallion doesn't think I'm a stinkin' genius anymore.
