Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this questionWell, I only met you once and you had Alex doing your talking for you. You called me Stallion, and I said Stallion wishes he was me LOL. So based on that I came away thinking you were short and unimaginative.

Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this questionPerfect. As long as we have zero expectations.
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this questionI am not and never have been a fan of the R and S. I believe that good football teams play physical hard nosed defense, run the ball, execute in the kicking game and play field position football. To me, fundamentals, blocking and tackling win football games, not fool em stuff. I believe that it is easier to run the football when the QB is a threat to run in designed plays.
Having said all that, the trend in college football seems to be toward more passing and spreading the defense. I love watching option teams like Navy execute their offense and one can make a real argument that the option can win more games with less talent than with most other offenses. But it was fun watching Texas Tech under Leach throw the ball and one cannot argue with his results. I don't believe that there is a lot of difference between what JJ does and Leach did. Bottom line to me is that SMU just does not now have the overall talent to be a consistent winner. Many of us got fooled by 2009 and the bowl win may have given us unrealistic expectations. It seems as if the new staff at SMU is doing a good job recruiting and we should be a stronger team next year. My goal is to have SMU where TCU is today. Like him or not Patterson has done a masterful job at TCU and SMU ought to be able, over time, to do as well. In the final analysis, I believe that JJ can make our program a lot better than it has been since the DP. Whether he can get us where TCU is is questionable because his philosophy is different than Patterson's. To me, this next two weeks is a critical time for SMU and JJ. It is all important that the staff get the team to come out against Marshall and play with the intensity, focus and effort that SMU showed in some of the earlier games. They also must eliminate the mistakes and IMO, get back to tackling well instead of seemingly focusing on creating turnovers. If they do that and perhaps get back a few players who have been crippled, we have a good chance to beat Marshall and I will be pleased. Maybe the most critical injury is the kicker. Without a reliable place kicker and punter it really changes the game.

I'm not going to argue that Rusty Burns is a better O coordinator than June Jones, but we are scoring less points against equivalent or worse defenses than several of the years under Bennett. Do we have less talent now than we did under Bennett? "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
Guys we have two corners on the field who would struggle on the NAIA level. Give him time to get some more talent in here. Also Zach Line has been great this year but he doesn't have breakaway speed like Shawnbrey. Shawnbrey could take it to the end zone from any spot on the field. The academic casualties were brutal and we lost a lot of talent. Terrence made some big plays last year and mcconico/gamble would have been much better corners than what we have.
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
Do you believe June Jones is held accountable enough for what does and does not happen in a game?
Or do you believe that he basically gets a lot of hands off treatment because when things are going poorly, the blame is usually shifted in another direction? Like you, I am not a fan of the offense. Unlike you, I like June very much personally and am delighted that he is here. Having said that, I predicted a 6 and 6 season back in August. This team is not deep, even by CUSA standards. Padron is talented, and tough, but not exactly what June is looking for in a QB. I'm not ready to hold anybody accountable for this very young team. Your question would be more fair in a couple of years when we see this year's freshman and redshirts filling the starting lineups, and substiting poor performing players is a real possibility. I have seen more wins in the past couple of years than in the previous 6 or 7 combined. Not going to complain at this point.
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
Dude, seriously? Isn't the point of an offense to put points on the board? And does this offense not do that? And I cannot believe anyone could not like the guy... To me, he's the most likable head coach imaginable.
The run and shoot is a lot of fun to watch and yes, it puts points on the board. But it doesn't keep the D off the field. Too many 3 and outs. A defense that is shallow on talent (like ours) is stretched to the limit bythe second half. See SMU v. Navy 2009 and 2010. But I have high hopes that our recruiting has improved and will improve and we will shore up the D.

Never talked to the man ( smirk )
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
Unless your one of the 20 Alumni paying $100,000 per/yer for his salary, then I would just be happy we have a coach like June here... Look, we are not Texas or Alabama, hell the SMU coaching job isn't even considered to be as big of a job as Baylor (because of the Big 12)... I don't know who you think is going to come coach here? If June can't turn it around, we might as well be considered a lost cause... I say give the man at least 5 years. He has said all along that this is a five year plan. I'm sick and tired of all these people on this forum acting like June is a terrible coach, because he is the best thing that has happened here in two decades. The people that repeatedly keep chirping this ignorant nonsense are unrealistic and quite frankly stupid... You guys sound worse than A&M fans...
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
agree with part of what you're saying, as I've said (and the majority of people I know have said) JJ is our last and only shot. As for the second part, who are "..all these people" that you and one or two other posters keep talking about? Aside from one thread and the author of same, I havent seen anyone else (I could be wrong) who has said June is a terrible coach.
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this questionThere are maybe 3 people on here badmouthing Jones as a coach, they just happen to be some of the loudest and most annoying posters.

Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this question
I'll presume that that was directed toward me. Sir, I DID NOT say that Jones was a bad coach. I said I don't like his offense. I think chucking it 40 yards down the field on 3rd and 1 -- a low percentage play -- is crazy. I also disagree that you need the defense to create turnovers to set up the offense "consistently". That's far-fetched. You can't assume that you're going to get 2 turnovers per game. You have to drive the ball. This offense doesn't do that and without the defense creating any opportunistic turnovers -- one of the TOs vs. Tulane was a INT in the end zone -- in the last 5 games, you can see where the production is suffering. I also said that when things go poorly -- and it will -- it seems like the trend that most people like to shift the blame to other factors and absolve him of any sins. I think that's ridiculous. To me, it just doesn't seem like he takes ownership when something goes poorly. "Well, I'm sure that if Kyle saw the film..." OK, June. That's fine. So since you're going to go on the record and say that, what exactly are you going to do to help him understand the film? What are you and Danny Morrison going to do to help him be a better quarterback?'' However, what I do respect about him is that he has a philosophy that he sticks with and has for decades. He knows exactly what he wants to do with it. That's great. I've said before that being consistent with a plan and getting the people to operate is half the battle. If Jones makes SMU a power because of this style of football, I'm fine with it. Any type of football can be successful. I would just prefer my football to be played a different way.
Re: Seeking people's honest answer on this questionwe could try the minnesota way?
how's that working out for you general?
