Jones does have leverage. SMU does not. I hate that kind of relationship. But we had to enter into one like this if this thing was ever going to get moving.
It was pretty much known in many circles that he wasn't coming here if the University wasn't going to change its academic standards. If he didn't come, it would have been a big swing and miss by Steve Orsini. The some also ran or aspiring DC or OC was coming here and the academic scene would have likely remained.
And sure, Jones got an extension last November. But didn't sign until when? August? Why was that?
Was the academic hiccup with the two kids who didn't get a chip in the game he played because he may have felt that SMU wasn't completely honest with him and he said he wasn't going to sign this thing until I can see tangible evidence things are changing?
I don't think we're ever going to get the real inside story on it. But we're talking about 9 or 10 months between the announcement and the signing.
How bout the horses? Everybody got mad at him because he played a major role in their becoming part of the scene. He definitely exerted his authority there.
Don't be surprised if Black makes its way into the color scheme in the next two years.
You would always hear him make some subtle remarks about the lack of an indoor facility (which I don't disagree that we absolutely need). So he's pushing that agenda. And it sounds like there a circles being proactive about trying to figure that out. Would another coach have the political clout to get this going?
Then you have countless attendance threads where people get paranoid that if it doesn't improve, June is going to leave. That paranoia feeds to Jones' influence over this deal.
And of course, most lap up what he says as gospel. They want to believe it because they want to win so bad it kills them.
We were willing to give this to him. He was no dummy. He took it and the big check.
He is a very powerful figure and should he get the program to the heights we hope it gets to -- in spite of that cornball offense

Jones chose the fat girl SMU at the prom. She feels good about herself. What will happen to her when the night is over?
