I absolutely believe the topic is relevant.

Jones does have leverage. SMU does not. I hate that kind of relationship. But we had to enter into one like this if this thing was ever going to get moving.

It was pretty much known in many circles that he wasn't coming here if the University wasn't going to change its academic standards. If he didn't come, it would have been a big swing and miss by Steve Orsini. The some also ran or aspiring DC or OC was coming here and the academic scene would have likely remained.

And sure, Jones got an extension last November. But didn't sign until when? August? Why was that?
Was the academic hiccup with the two kids who didn't get a chip in the game he played because he may have felt that SMU wasn't completely honest with him and he said he wasn't going to sign this thing until I can see tangible evidence things are changing?

I don't think we're ever going to get the real inside story on it. But we're talking about 9 or 10 months between the announcement and the signing.

How bout the horses? Everybody got mad at him because he played a major role in their becoming part of the scene. He definitely exerted his authority there.

Don't be surprised if Black makes its way into the color scheme in the next two years.

You would always hear him make some subtle remarks about the lack of an indoor facility (which I don't disagree that we absolutely need). So he's pushing that agenda. And it sounds like there a circles being proactive about trying to figure that out. Would another coach have the political clout to get this going?

Then you have countless attendance threads where people get paranoid that if it doesn't improve, June is going to leave. That paranoia feeds to Jones' influence over this deal.

And of course, most lap up what he says as gospel. They want to believe it because they want to win so bad it kills them.

We were willing to give this to him. He was no dummy. He took it and the big check.

He is a very powerful figure and should he get the program to the heights we hope it gets to -- in spite of that cornball offense  -- then he will become the most powerful figure on the SMU campus. More powerful than Dr. Turner.

Jones chose the fat girl SMU at the prom. She feels good about herself. What will happen to her when the night is over?

She will probably come down with a very bad STD.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I forgot about this.

Last year it was widely speculated or known a deal with the Hawaii bowl was in the works when we reached 6 wins.

Then when it turned out we happened to be in the West race and had a chance to compete for the Liberty Bowl, Jones steers the conversation about still playing in Hawaii and not Memphis had we been CUSA champs. I think there was a loophole that didn't require the champion to go to Memphis?

And there were enough on here who were on board with his argument.

Betcha a dime to a dollar had we won CUSA we were off to the islands.

I think the two posts CLEARLY define how he controls this relationship with SMU.

Thanks

Bump for the keeper of the star since he was complaining I didn't have a point.

Well, here, pal. Here's my point WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH IT OR NOT!

No you did a good job with your point and supporting arguments. No further comment. You will make an even stronger advocate when you don't look to others to give confirmation to your convictions

This is like advocating who needs more than the other in a marriage - it doesn't matter who is (most likely her), if you can't recognize it's both of your butts on the line then you are both in trouble.

Congratulations, you started a pointless disussion.

Well I guess I still miss the point (not the first time). If your point is that he has leverage then it's an obvious one. If your point is you hate that kind of a relationship, I think nobody cares.

Therefore, against my better judgment I say to you, so what? Let's assume he has the mustangs playing in the post-season regularly over the foreseeable future. Given the relative weakness of CUSA as compared with the number of bowl tie-ins, it's certainly feasible. Would you trade mustang success (as defined by post-season appearances) for a relationship more suited to your "balanced" tastes?

I referenced the fat girl at the prom analogy. It's a two way street. People need to remember that.

So, your point is he might leave? What does that has to do with his leverage General? And would you trade success for somebody who better suits your "balance" tastes?

Why did he wait 8-9 months to sign a contract extension? I got the sense people were getting nervous about his future here when that was still sitting out there.
